Tether your iPhone for Internet (blackberry and android too)

I like posting quick fixes - which will hopefully save those attempting to do the same do it faster...After I made a few different attempts and failed. This particular fix can save you alot in terms of internet connectivity, such that you can just plug your iPhone, Blackberry or Android (have not tried on the later two); on the USB (as you charge) and just browse from your machine without having to carry so many other devices - you can just use your phone. (This could be important for those who travel from place to place) I found out that this link doesn't work for iPhone 3.0.x and above: : http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/28/activate-and-enable-iphone-as-inter... But the following works for the later versions of iPhone OS, dont know about 3.1.3 etc... You will need to have your iPhone jailbroken for this one: ========= Here goes: ========= How to install iPhone programs using Cyder from the PC - not Cydia from the iPhone. I find Cyder faster and better because one can see what is wrong: The program you want to install to enable tethering is called "PDAnet" which allows tethering via USB and Wi-Fi. ================================= How to install PDAnet through Cyder (on PC): ================================== 1) open the Cyder program; and connect the iphone. Watch down there and it should say "detecting device ipod/iphone" then it says "ready" download Cyder: http://www.ihackintosh.com/2010/02/cyder-2-manage-and-install-cydia-package-... FYI - Cyder is like iTunes, but for installing jailbroken apps :-) 2) make sure the repo path is added at the first menu "sources"; I already have the big bosses added, but you can add this one to get PDAnet: http://apt.modmyi.com/dists/stable/main/binary-iphoneos-arm/packages Or simply fetch sources from the iphone by clicking "Get more sources" on Cyder. 3) Go to "settings" and put the proxy and password; Or un-tick proxy box for automatic connections or dial up 4) Go to "packages", do a search for what you want e.g PDAnet and download with dependancies - by right clicking to select, then go to "downloads" and click to download the App and the dependancies one by one until the icon turns brown/orange. Check down there the green bar for download progress. 5) Then go to "file manager" and drag/throw the app and its dependencies to "Cydia cache" and "Cydia Install" - just to be sure. Then switch off the iphone and then power on. 6) Go to Cydia on iphone, click on "packages" and see the installation was successful - by checking that "PDAnet" is listed. For PDAnet ======== -PDAnet enables you to tether your iphone via USB or wi-fi; but we are speaking of USB. -PDAnet comes with two dependancies (1)network commands (2) an SBSettings shortcut (not neccesary if you havent installed SBsettings) -PDAnet also comes with a desktop application for windows to enable USB tethering; that you can find here and read about here: #http://www.junefabrics.com/desktop/ #http://www.junefabrics.com/iphone/index.php -On "Windows" The icon for desktop client appears on the right hand side of the taskbar; simply double click and the program will tell you the status of connection -The PDAnet on iPhone will appear on the same page as other applications (last page usually), and you go to the PDAnet program, click on settings and select "USB tether" -Selecting USB tether should enable the PDAnet Windows desktop client to recognize the iPhone for USB tether -Then you need to make sure that you have set the right apn, and have enough credit, post paid etc -To confirm your APN on your iPhone, go to settings>general>network>cellular data networks. Consult your network operator for the right APN: Orange=bew.orange.co.ke Zain = ke.celtel.com Safcom = web.safcom.com *or* safaricom Yu = internet (not sure) Other REFs: ========= # http://www.tipb.com/2008/10/16/how-to-tether-with-pdanet/ # http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/tips-tricks/how-to-setup-pdanet-and-tether-data... # http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news/468311-3g-usb-iphone-tethering-pdanet-1...
