So Steve Jobs has finally unveiled the iPad amidst much fanfare. Much like what many had speculated, but seems to be using a special chip, not Intel. Guess now we may be seeing that chip in other devices like the iPhone and MacBook. I am sure Intel is watching this with much intrest, and it is not unlike Apple to disrupt industries it enters. All in all I think it is a beautiful device, and I am waiting for the pricing details. It will have both WiFi and 3G, but I am not sure it is tied to carriers like the iPhone. And they announced the iBook, an eBook Reader application for the iPad.

The 3G network isn't useful for anyone here, since it does not use a regular SIM card but a Micro-SIM card which your network must first allow - maybe if the networks move faster then we can use the 3G but at the moment, its only AT&T and European Band I networks (2100MHz), that is way the 3G support comes with an extra $130. I guess Wi-Fi will work for most of us. ./Ok3ch On Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 11:20 PM, Isaak Mogetutu <imogetutu@googlemail.com> wrote:

I suspect Apple has scored a home run with the iPad - It competes directly against netbooks & laptops as a device for internet access - It competed directly against multimedia players (iPods, Zunes, Creative, etc) - It competes directly against ebook readers (Kindle, Sony, etc) - It is a functional email client (over and above gmail, yahoo etc access) - It has (potentially) office software (presentation, word processing & spreadsheet). This makes it a killer machine for demos & working on the move - Pretty much idiot proof -- no configuration, console, etc. A button and it's on or off. - You can carry it to bed, use it lying down on the sofa, on the plane etc - It is integrated with an online store - There are millions of applications already available for it - Anyone can use it off the bat, from techies to the average housewife I personally intend to get one as a multimedia device & ebook reader. But i will wait for version 2 so adventurous folk can be guinea pigs and find all the issues On Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 9:51 AM, Josiah Mugambi <jmugambi@gmail.com> wrote:

I think I just love the iPad. It has the portability that Netbook or even the smallest of laptops work, and the simplicity of a phone. The ability to run iWorks is a big boost, you can actually use it as a laptop replacement. Edit documents on the go, do presentations. I am not sure if it has a port for connecting to a projector, but if it has, soon you will see Michael Joseph ditch his Lenovo and start announcing Safaricom's results directly from the iPad. I have never been a fan of these Netbooks, as Steve Jobs says, they are good at nothing. I think the iPhone like OS it is based on is very lightweight, so it will be faster, and somehow takes the thunder out of Google’s Chrome OS. It is also elegant, I think when it comes to aesthetics no one beats Apple. And then you can watch HT Movies on it. The people to be worried by the iPad are the likes of Jeff Bezos of Amazon, I can see how it will be tough for him to market the Kindle which is just an eBook reader while the iPad is much more than that. I bet you will want an eBook reader that can also play movies and where you can do your email and word-processing. Other threatened companies are the like of eePC and Asus. Their Netbook segment is now under threat. But I think the iPad will be expensive. Could be anything from USD 800 to USD 100. Guess it is hard to compete with a USD 200 Acer or Asus Netbook. But let's wait and see. .

I disagree with you about Bezos. If anything Bezos' strategy is sheer genius. Amazon are not in the market to sell eBook readers. They are in the market to sell books. Put another way the Kindle is a device to enable Amazon to sell more books and newspapers. On top of that, a Kindle is not a mere ebook reader. All kindles have inbuilt wifi. Amazon will PAY for you to access the Amazon store for free. You can buy books and have them downloaded to your kindle. And here comes the genius part -- you can read these books from ANY device associated with your account using custom Amazon applications. There is one for the PC , one upcoming from the Mac AND ONE FOR THE iPHONE. You can buy & read Kindle books with anything, including an iPad. This means that Amazon will be happier the more successful the iPad is because they will sell more books. Sure, they won't ship as many kindles but the money is in the books, not the device. BTW the cheapest iPad is just under 400$ On Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 10:30 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

May be you disgree about Jeff, but one think I know about Apple they have an habit of being disruptive. Years ago the big music stores, I think Amazon included, did not feel threatened by the iPod, because it was just a device. The the iTunes store came, and I think today most of digital music is sold through iTunes by Apple. The likes of Amazon have their stores, but they don't just compete. I can imagine Apple coming up with an intuitive Books store, like iBooks, that will make the Kindle experience seem shady. The company has the financial muscle to whip the major publishers in to the line of thinking, and it will not be long before Amazon feels the heat. They have been having talks with Major publishes of late, so we can only guess what they are cooking up there in Cupertino. And it can not be good for Amazon. Amazon may have be good now at selling books, but I think they have a bleak future faced with competition from Apple. Apple may even come up with some crazy idea to sell content from freelance writers who have never been publishers, much like the iPhone Developers now, and share the revenue with them. We may even have the guys encouraging budding authors to write books to sell on the iBook store. So those of you who have been having dreams of being the next Robert Ludlum but know that you may never get published, watch the Apple show and wait. We can only wait and see.

Rad - you are on point with Amazon - this is good news for Amazon, since its not the Kindle they sell, but a way to access ebooks, and the iPad will just generate more revenue for them. Just like the blogs have been saying, Steve Jobs looks at a gadget you don't need (netbooks) and creates a need for it - and keeps the whole world talking about it - one strategy which the other big boyz have never thought of doing, or if they did, they never do it quite as good as Jobs ./Ok3ch On Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 10:42 AM, Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> wrote:

This means that Amazon will be happier the more successful the iPad is because they will sell more books. Sure, they won't ship as many kindles but the money is in the books, not the device. BTW the cheapest iPad is just under 400$ On Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 10:30 AM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com<mailto:pmusyoki@gmail.com>> wrote: I think I just love the iPad. But let's wait and see. . _______________________________________________ Skunkworks mailing list Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke<mailto:Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks ------------ Skunkworks Server donations spreadsheet http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AopdHkqSqKL-dHlQVTMxU1VBdU1BSWJxdy1f... ------------ Skunkworks Rules http://my.co.ke/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=94 ------------ Other services @ http://my.co.ke Other lists ------------- Announce: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks-announce Science: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/science kazi: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/admin/kazi/general ________________________________ Strathmore University provides all-round education in an atmosphere of freedom and responsibility. Steve Jobs for life !!! Lakini I dont think this device will do well at all - we are still waiting for the iPhone 3GS - and they have this one out already ? They shud have given it a few more years to release, where mabbe in future the whole world would be covered in 3G : http://www.nation.co.ke/blogs/-/634/850014/-/view/asBlogPost/-/pjyirj/-/inde... == and mabbe by then people will be reading news papers straight from small computer screens like iPads - but until then... I think iPad is a failed product.

May be what is need for people to start reading newspapers on small computer screens like iPads is the iPad. Sometimes you can't wait for the world to move in your direction to do anything. The world needs pushing, just like the way the iPod revolutioned music on small devices may the iPad will take mobile computing to a new level. Who is waiting for the iPhone 3GS? 3GS is so last year, we are waiting for the next iPhone (4GS) or whatever.

Well, still waiting for the iPhone 3GS - to be released in Kenya - where it will be cheaper for us locals.. Tyring to import has not been worth the trouble because of the 2 year contracts etcetra <or is it already being sold in Orange?> The battery life on the iPhone 3G does not do alot of justice to heavy users - especially when you try to do things online. === As for the iPad, lets wait and see how it performs - mabbe their marketing strategy is good.

My friend if you want an unlocked 3GS you can get one either at Diamond Plaza or Elite Sarit On Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 12:22 PM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

I think it is never cheaper for locals with Orange. It is actually more expensive. You can get better prices without contracts from UK or US carriers, but the phones are locked to their networks. But for those who know jailbreaking and unlocking, this should not bother them. But O2 is unlocking them in the UK after losing the sole rights to distribute the iPhone in the UK.

With respect to the line of work i'm in, i'm going to try and fend for the iPhone locally. Thing is, i don't know whether Orange is moving with the Apple deal. Frankly, i'm not sure Apple wants a contract deal with anyone anymore and that brings an important note to the table. With the way things are moving i.e. Macbooks, iPad and iPhones; the A4 Processor as well, i doubt Apple is looking for a future "with" anyone. Considering the fact that intel's processor is great but they still have their own designed and put into a brand new product says one thing to me. Freedom. Apple has been known to turn heads with everything they do. So to answer simply after all that rambling, i doubt the 3Gs will be cheaper for us but the next gen iPhone which i would assume will be released in approx 60 days with the iPad will be cheaper. It will also have better battery life which has been tested by then on the iPad and that'll be testing a few new technologies out for them thereby bringing them the new processor's in the iPhones, later in the macbooks. In retrospect, the fact that they'll be producing their own hardware and software will mean less outsourcing, more in house dev thus reducing costs, increasing reliability and making all Apple products cheaper for Kenyans. That's my take. PS: I'll be at the Jan 30th Event talking about the Adobe technologies, if i get a chance to, will also speak about the Apple Dev tech respect to iPhone Dev Central. ndungu stephen wrote:
