Re: [Skunkworks] Oohh I like this

As Gakuru rightly put it, it would be far much better to analyse the cost-benefit rather than fantasize on these technologies.Techies(me included) get excited over such but it would be an quite an eye opener for us if a researcher or market analyst could perform an analysis of relevant services. What I expect in 2010 is a more vibrant consumer awareness in the telecom sector and what should rightly be expected from operators. Many a times operators raise high expectations but those of us locked up in server rooms know all too well the challenges and shortcomings of eg wireless access technologies, etc which are not unique in Kenya; a little googling will confirm this.I am well aware that firms are out to make or squeeze bucks from subscribers. However, with more awareness at least subs will know what they are getting into.In developed countries there exist very well informed consumer rights groups who even perform real life demos and tests for consumers.Remember those early days of flash disks? You walk in and buy a 512mb but is it really 512mb?My 500gb reads 486gb from the properties tab! Never had anyone complain. Why?Because we all know what bits and bytes are. What's the use of these technologies if consumers cannot access 1 Mbps - despite 2 undersea cables? Or if they do, they continue paying with a limb (or two)? Why continue living a lie?
Moving forward in 2010 I think in we need and must resolve to no longer fantasize over technologies but rather question their cost-benefit worth to us as a people.

correction, the speeds I indicate here are in KiB/s and NOT kbps. To convert KiB/s(kilobytes per second) to kbps(kilobits per second), one multiplies by 8. Therefore my actual Orange speeds are 3-6-15 KiB/s (24-48-90 kbps) on bad-normal-good days. at 15 KiB/s? speeds are good. Apology to all parties for mis information.

4G networks are being implemented while we are happy about 3G trials.
Reading further I see achievements of 100mbps speeds compared to HSDPA 7.2mbps

@ Rahim, I hope that there's a lot and not just some truth in that. I ditched Suffercicon for Orange two months ago and i welcome all improvements in their speeds. Oh, and a cost/benefit analysis shows at present it's miles ahead of the other mobile networks. and am talking about Orange GSM and not CDMA. In this talk about Cost/Benefit let's not be like the mice who wanted to bell the cat. Let's criticise but more importantly let this be practical with suggestions. I have also ditched Suffericon voice. Sasa niko Yuu tu sana, for example. well, I tend to agree with Alex in his front but frankly speaking, at the moment, I'm more hopeful about the orange bwidth increase specially If it's moving away from the edge. I moved away from suddericom as well a few months ago, I'm now with Zain and horej! An I'm glad I made the shift. If they do decide to move to 4G, I believe that would also open the front to the iTunes store for Kenya. From my grapevine, the wait on our store opening is the restriction on bwidth. I will try and find out more about the 4g as well as get more info on the app store for Kenya Happy new year Ooohh almost forgot. 010110. On Saturday, January 2, 2010,<whynnot@gmail.com> wrote:

Just out of curiousity, all those service providers now have a unified license, dont they? So they can offer wifi / wimax, right? I wonder what would happen if all of kenya were turned into a wifi hotspot. Shared infrastructure, low cost of deployment, max number of ssid per frequency band, multiple business models. . . . "If wireline providers charge more for service packages that involve greater speeds and/or higher usage limits, consumers purchasing these packages may not enjoy the benefits of competition from wireless broadband, or may do so only indirectly to the extent that consumers as a whole display a willingness to substitute slower wireless service for faster wireline service," the agency said in its filing. The comments were submitted as part of the FCC's push to bring affordable broadband services to all U.S. homes. Obama has made universal access to a high-speed Internet the cornerstone of his technology agenda. And Congress has mandated that the FCC, an independent agency, come up with a plan by February. Consumer groups, which have been critical of the FCC's approach on broadband, said the comments by Justice and the NTIA indicate the administration agrees there are not enough options for Internet users. "They are going out of their way to say competition is important and that there isn't enough and this is a new approach," said Mark Cooper, president of the Consumers Federation of America. "The FCC has been looking at spectrum as the great savior, but then they have to answer the question of what happens if spectrum gets captured by incumbent wireline companies." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/04/AR2010010403...

Alex, Your comments are spot on. For those who subscribed to Orange (GSM voice) soon after launch would remember a tariff that was cheaper (almost similar to the promotion Zain have been running the last quarter of 2009) and would allow you to select friends/family at a cheaper rate. One day somebody (some people) at Orange decided to do away with the Tariff "waka tu wacha kwa mataa" What I am saying here is that even if they upgrade to what and the service is not up to par as per the consumer expectations and we don't really get service worth what we are paying for, we shall just have to make do with what we get. That's why any time there is a major problem that touches on Mwananchi you'll hear the line "tunaomba serikali..." I wish serikali would come to our aid.
