Why do you think Multi National Tech Conferences in Africa occur in RSA or in North Africa? http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=61283041553&topic=6560 The Norwegian Developers Conference http://www.ndc2009.no/en/tickets/index.aspx?cat=1073&id=1305 (@ USD 1,000 for 1 day pass, USD 1,400 for 2 day pass, USD 1580 for 3 day pass) in June 2009 had ONLY 1000 attendees. They were expecting 2000 attendees but ... http://www.kjetilk.com/2009/06/ndc-2009-highlights.html The Norwegian Java Developers Conference on Sept 9-10, 2009 had 2000 attendees. It was USD 800 for early registration and USD 1000 after that for the two days. http://www.java.no/javazone/2009/cfp.html and http://www.java.no/javazone/2009/registration.html Norway population = 4.8M = Nairobi Population. Kenya Population = 40M. Do we have any major PHP, Java, .Net or Electronics Conferences to speak of? Has poor turn out discouraged organizers and investors? If some in the US have brought their developer conference prices to USD 99.00 per head per day (http://stackoverflow.carsonified.com/ and http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2009/05/12.html) am sure we Kenyans can pull off good quality tech conferences for about 3-4K per head per day. Lower bandwidth costs will help more of us connect online but we need more. Considering traditional media is so expensive to advertise in we need like 100 web sites we can advertise on - barter trade on.
