@Anthony. Realistically, unless u're running a 6969, there is no way to get 10M people on an app in Kenya. Don't mention Mpesa coz there are special cases that apply to it ... It's quite strange for a teleco to say that they cant do 70% because they cant justify ROI, while they expect a content developer to take 30% as revenue share and expect them to justify ROI to their investors. Now, whenever I talk to someone about this topic, I always ask, what's the justification for a teleco. What is this ROI? And the conversation ends up with the law of supply and demand i.e. the Telecos have infrasturcure so they can charge what they want. That's OK however, competition is thick in the air and that's why I brought this up as a way for a teleco to attract content. Regarding handset manufacturers versus telecos. A teleco can setup it's own portal, exclusive to it's subscribers. Could anyone on this forum tell us what merits Mpesa has over ZAP? I use ZAP and personally, I find it much better than Mpesa in terms of response time, easy nicknames and availability of float. The only challenge is i know is that ZAP Agents are not widely spread like Mpesa and am sure this they will work on, as their client-base grows! For me it's Airtel for life! It's quite strange for a teleco to say that they cant do 70% because they cant justify ROI, while they expect a content developer to take 30% as revenue share and expect them to justify ROI to their investors. Now, whenever I talk to someone about this topic, I always ask, what's the justification for a teleco. What is this ROI? And the conversation ends up with the law of supply and demand i.e. the Telecos have infrasturcure so they can charge what they want. That's OK however, competition is thick in the air and that's why I brought this up as a way for a teleco to attract content.
Regarding handset manufacturers versus telecos. A teleco can setup it's own portal, exclusive to it's subscribers. It's not a unique case for handset manufacturers.

70%!! almost sounds like a dream for Kenyan telcos, and IMHO it may remain that way. The only reason that other mobile app stores give developers that much is because the stores are owned by handset manufacturers. These OEMs have an interest in seeing apps developed to run on their handsets and the more content they get the better for them, IMHO the only way it would work for telcos is if they probably concentrated on, forgive my language, data intensive apps. Without proof of a good ROI it would be tough for them to support content developers.
The focus for mobile content developers should be the market of over 10million subscribers, if you manage to get 1Kshs per day from 1% of that market then you'll be set for a while. What content developers need to is creativity and a knack for getting around the various gardens that characterize our technology ecosystem, otherwise we'll die complaining.
P.S. Even facebook knows that the STK is here to stay.

I'm inclined to agree with Safcom. They might loose some customers, mostly those without MPESA, but Safcom is here to stay with the majority numbers. However, it will also be difficult for them to increase subscribers. IMO the future for higher profits is to get more revenue per subscriber. If Airtel, Orange... got an equal number of subsribers with Safcom, what next?.
Now there is a complex situation that exists today that didn't exist before. Mpesa and other SIM applications could get away with difficult UI experience back in the days, which they can't today because of the great UI experience on applications that can be downloaded on the phones. Back in the days a VAS is what was on the SIM, today, it's not. That means telecos have lost their grip on the VAS that can be put on the phone. IMO no teleco should be comfortable with the idea of having a unique VAS on their network.
So telecos have to attract content developers, who now hold the V in VAS. The only true way is to give the content developers decent revenue share on decent terms.
Now my conclusion is something I said many months ago after being frustrated by the low revenue share that telecos offer and the hoops that come with it...
The winning teleco is the one that will offer decent revenue share to content developers. Nothing more, nothing less. If Orange and Airtel (Zain, ...) want to cut down Safcom (assuming Safcom would, unlikely, be sleeping), give content developers at least 70%, and allow your subsribers to pay via airtime. That 70% is what the developer takes to the office, no strange hidden agendas! To put icing on the cake, allow an API to your systems so that content developers can integrate the payment in their applications.
To be fair to the telecos, it's said that under the law, a content developer has to go through a Content Provider (or PRSP, smthing like that). Well, it's about time such laws were removed, unless there is clear benefit for having them.

There will always be people who want to be different, so there will always be market for an alternative provider I think safaricom succeeded in making their competition chase down the wrong alley. First was to make people believe that Cost was the issue, ask Airtel how many people moved vis a vis getting another line Now they made them think its Portability.....and airtel swallowed it and passed on the same to HQ in India....now they are doing full page ads Have I even considered moving? I have Mpesa(and my entire clan and broke pals) I use Okoa Jahazi easily, even more importantly i have groups of friends on Semeni(SMS groups- will we all migrate? you tell me) and you can buy safaricom credit anywhere within the kenyan borders,im sure even Pirates okoa jahazi(no pun intended) as they cross over. I also have mobile Banking by a certain VAS provider ,i occasionally download tunes......in short, safaricom has colonized my life. To move means visiting all those offices and people to change all the above.... Safaricom has always had an ecosystem convenient to the Kenyan, this is their secret, not individual products or touchpoints. For any competitor to shake their dominance, they need to rethink the set up of the peculiar Kenyans life and come up with a value proposition that makes sense to that set up......Ask Nokia why they run to partner with Microsoft, Ecosystem is the new tech value proposition. I think safaricom succeeded in making their competition chase down the wrong alley. First was to make people believe that Cost was the issue, ask Airtel how many people moved vis a vis getting another line

Safaricom has always had an ecosystem convenient to the Kenyan, this is their secret, not individual products or touchpoints.
For any competitor to shake their dominance, they need to rethink the set up of the peculiar Kenyans life and come up with a value proposition that makes sense to that set up......Ask Nokia why they run to partner with Microsoft, Ecosystem is the new tech value proposition.

It's quite strange for a teleco to say that they cant do 70% because they cant justify ROI, while they expect a content developer to take 30% as revenue share and expect them to justify ROI to their investors. Now, whenever I talk to someone about this topic, I always ask, what's the justification for a teleco. What is this ROI? And the conversation ends up with the law of supply and demand i.e. the Telecos have infrasturcure so they can charge what they want. That's OK however, competition is thick in the air and that's why I brought this up as a way for a teleco to attract content.
Regarding handset manufacturers versus telecos. A teleco can setup it's own portal, exclusive to it's subscribers. It's not a unique case for handset manufacturers.

70%!! almost sounds like a dream for Kenyan telcos, and IMHO it may remain that way. The only reason that other mobile app stores give developers that much is because the stores are owned by handset manufacturers. These OEMs have an interest in seeing apps developed to run on their handsets and the more content they get the better for them, IMHO the only way it would work for telcos is if they probably concentrated on, forgive my language, data intensive apps. Without proof of a good ROI it would be tough for them to support content developers.
The focus for mobile content developers should be the market of over 10million subscribers, if you manage to get 1Kshs per day from 1% of that market then you'll be set for a while. What content developers need to is creativity and a knack for getting around the various gardens that characterize our technology ecosystem, otherwise we'll die complaining.

I'm inclined to agree with Safcom. They might loose some customers, mostly those without MPESA, but Safcom is here to stay with the majority numbers. However, it will also be difficult for them to increase subscribers. IMO the future for higher profits is to get more revenue per subscriber. If Airtel, Orange... got an equal number of subsribers with Safcom, what next?.
Now there is a complex situation that exists today that didn't exist before. Mpesa and other SIM applications could get away with difficult UI experience back in the days, which they can't today because of the great UI experience on applications that can be downloaded on the phones. Back in the days a VAS is what was on the SIM, today, it's not. That means telecos have lost their grip on the VAS that can be put on the phone. IMO no teleco should be comfortable with the idea of having a unique VAS on their network.
So telecos have to attract content developers, who now hold the V in VAS. The only true way is to give the content developers decent revenue share on decent terms.
Now my conclusion is something I said many months ago after being frustrated by the low revenue share that telecos offer and the hoops that come with it...
The winning teleco is the one that will offer decent revenue share to content developers. Nothing more, nothing less. If Orange and Airtel (Zain, ...) want to cut down Safcom (assuming Safcom would, unlikely, be sleeping), give content developers at least 70%, and allow your subsribers to pay via airtime. That 70% is what the developer takes to the office, no strange hidden agendas! To put icing on the cake, allow an API to your systems so that content developers can integrate the payment in their applications.
To be fair to the telecos, it's said that under the law, a content developer has to go through a Content Provider (or PRSP, smthing like that). Well, it's about time such laws were removed, unless there is clear benefit for having them.

Honestly, this no. portability does not make sense to me at all. What is the business or economic sense of it? If i you are dissatisfied with an operator, move to the competitor! Or have two SIMS! Someone was just looking for a way to make money from Kenyans! I mean, customers are not stupid to be looked in a network they don't want. Kwani how long does it it to copy your contacts and inform them on your number change. This is a kin to saying the banks should introduce accounts portability instead of one opening a new account I can bet my foot that this idea came from Airtel as way to get subscribers from Safaricom! Please, explain to me the business logic of this idea! Clearly a Safaricom enthusiast, but If these are the reasons to call Safaricom an "Ecosystem", then Airtel has better. On safaricom, "Okoa Jahazi" is limited to 45 bob (though they say it is 50) and they charge you for that. Zain you can Kopa double that. Mobile banking -- trust Airtel (or even YU and Orange) to always be ON. Safaricom is off for the most part. Lets not even mention downloads, calling and SMS rates, Group SMSs and calling or mobile money
What is the use of having a service that is down half the time (especially when you need it the most!) It is not even close to an ecosystem!

I think safaricom succeeded in making their competition chase down the wrong alley. First was to make people believe that Cost was the issue, ask Airtel how many people moved vis a vis getting another line
Now they made them think its Portability.....and airtel swallowed it and passed on the same to HQ in India....now they are doing full page ads

I have Mpesa(and my entire clan and broke pals) I use Okoa Jahazi easily, even more importantly i have groups of friends on Semeni(SMS groups- will we all migrate? you tell me) and you can buy safaricom credit anywhere within the kenyan borders,im sure even Pirates okoa jahazi(no pun intended) as they cross over. I also have mobile Banking by a certain VAS provider ,i occasionally download tunes......in short, safaricom has colonized my life. To move means visiting all those offices and people to change all the above....
Safaricom has always had an ecosystem convenient to the Kenyan, this is their secret, not individual products or touchpoints.
For any competitor to shake their dominance, they need to rethink the set up of the peculiar Kenyans life and come up with a value proposition that makes sense to that set up......Ask Nokia why they run to partner with Microsoft, Ecosystem is the new tech value proposition.

It's quite strange for a teleco to say that they cant do 70% because they cant justify ROI, while they expect a content developer to take 30% as revenue share and expect them to justify ROI to their investors. Now, whenever I talk to someone about this topic, I always ask, what's the justification for a teleco. What is this ROI? And the conversation ends up with the law of supply and demand i.e. the Telecos have infrasturcure so they can charge what they want. That's OK however, competition is thick in the air and that's why I brought this up as a way for a teleco to attract content.
Regarding handset manufacturers versus telecos. A teleco can setup it's own portal, exclusive to it's subscribers. It's not a unique case for handset manufacturers.

70%!! almost sounds like a dream for Kenyan telcos, and IMHO it may remain that way. The only reason that other mobile app stores give developers that much is because the stores are owned by handset manufacturers. These OEMs have an interest in seeing apps developed to run on their handsets and the more content they get the better for them, IMHO the only way it would work for telcos is if they probably concentrated on, forgive my language, data intensive apps. Without proof of a good ROI it would be tough for them to support content developers.
The focus for mobile content developers should be the market of over 10million subscribers, if you manage to get 1Kshs per day from 1% of that market then you'll be set for a while. What content developers need to is creativity and a knack for getting around the various gardens that characterize our technology ecosystem, otherwise we'll die complaining.
P.S. Even facebook knows that the STK is here to stay.

I'm inclined to agree with Safcom. They might loose some customers, mostly those without MPESA, but Safcom is here to stay with the majority numbers. However, it will also be difficult for them to increase subscribers. IMO the future for higher profits is to get more revenue per subscriber. If Airtel, Orange... got an equal number of subsribers with Safcom, what next?.
Now there is a complex situation that exists today that didn't exist before. Mpesa and other SIM applications could get away with difficult UI experience back in the days, which they can't today because of the great UI experience on applications that can be downloaded on the phones. Back in the days a VAS is what was on the SIM, today, it's not. That means telecos have lost their grip on the VAS that can be put on the phone. IMO no teleco should be comfortable with the idea of having a unique VAS on their network.
So telecos have to attract content developers, who now hold the V in VAS. The only true way is to give the content developers decent revenue share on decent terms.
Now my conclusion is something I said many months ago after being frustrated by the low revenue share that telecos offer and the hoops that come with it...
The winning teleco is the one that will offer decent revenue share to content developers. Nothing more, nothing less. If Orange and Airtel (Zain, ...) want to cut down Safcom (assuming Safcom would, unlikely, be sleeping), give content developers at least 70%, and allow your subsribers to pay via airtime. That 70% is what the developer takes to the office, no strange hidden agendas! To put icing on the cake, allow an API to your systems so that content developers can integrate the payment in their applications.
To be fair to the telecos, it's said that under the law, a content developer has to go through a Content Provider (or PRSP, smthing like that). Well, it's about time such laws were removed, unless there is clear benefit for having them.

Clearly a Safaricom enthusiast, but If these are the reasons to call Safaricom an "Ecosystem", then Airtel has better. On safaricom, "Okoa Jahazi" is limited to 45 bob (though they say it is 50) and they charge you for that. Zain you can Kopa double that. Mobile banking -- trust Airtel (or even YU and Orange) to
always be ON. Safaricom is off for the most part. Lets not even mention downloads, calling and SMS rates, Group SMSs and calling or mobile money
What is the use of having a service that is down half the time (especially when you need it the most!) It is not even close to an ecosystem!

Safaricom has always had an ecosystem convenient to the Kenyan, this is their secret, not individual products or touchpoints.
For any competitor to shake their dominance, they need to rethink the set up of the peculiar Kenyans life and come up with a value proposition that makes sense to that set up......Ask Nokia why they run to partner with Microsoft, Ecosystem is the new tech value proposition.

I will stick to safaricom because they talk my language. To date they are the only ones with 3g, they are the only ones who understand what android is and are actively pushing it. Technology excites me and most of my friends. The rest may be cheaper for voice calls but most young guys spend their time on twitter etc. Safcom know this and thats why they aint going anywhere. It's quite strange for a teleco to say that they cant do 70% because they cant justify ROI, while they expect a content developer to take 30% as revenue share and expect them to justify ROI to their investors. Now, whenever I talk to someone about this topic, I always ask, what's the justification for a teleco. What is this ROI? And the conversation ends up with the law of supply and demand i.e. the Telecos have infrasturcure so they can charge what they want. That's OK however, competition is thick in the air and that's why I brought this up as a way for a teleco to attract content.
Regarding handset manufacturers versus telecos. A teleco can setup it's own portal, exclusive to it's subscribers. It's not a unique case for handset manufacturers.

70%!! almost sounds like a dream for Kenyan telcos, and IMHO it may remain that way. The only reason that other mobile app stores give developers that much is because the stores are owned by handset manufacturers. These OEMs have an interest in seeing apps developed to run on their handsets and the more content they get the better for them, IMHO the only way it would work for telcos is if they probably concentrated on, forgive my language, data intensive apps. Without proof of a good ROI it would be tough for them to support content developers.
The focus for mobile content developers should be the market of over 10million subscribers, if you manage to get 1Kshs per day from 1% of that market then you'll be set for a while. What content developers need to is creativity and a knack for getting around the various gardens that characterize our technology ecosystem, otherwise we'll die complaining.
P.S. Even facebook knows that the STK is here to stay.

I'm inclined to agree with Safcom. They might loose some customers, mostly those without MPESA, but Safcom is here to stay with the majority numbers. However, it will also be difficult for them to increase subscribers. IMO the future for higher profits is to get more revenue per subscriber. If Airtel, Orange... got an equal number of subsribers with Safcom, what next?.
Now there is a complex situation that exists today that didn't exist before. Mpesa and other SIM applications could get away with difficult UI experience back in the days, which they can't today because of the great UI experience on applications that can be downloaded on the phones. Back in the days a VAS is what was on the SIM, today, it's not. That means telecos have lost their grip on the VAS that can be put on the phone. IMO no teleco should be comfortable with the idea of having a unique VAS on their network.
So telecos have to attract content developers, who now hold the V in VAS. The only true way is to give the content developers decent revenue share on decent terms.
Now my conclusion is something I said many months ago after being frustrated by the low revenue share that telecos offer and the hoops that come with it...
The winning teleco is the one that will offer decent revenue share to content developers. Nothing more, nothing less. If Orange and Airtel (Zain, ...) want to cut down Safcom (assuming Safcom would, unlikely, be sleeping), give content developers at least 70%, and allow your subsribers to pay via airtime. That 70% is what the developer takes to the office, no strange hidden agendas! To put icing on the cake, allow an API to your systems so that content developers can integrate the payment in their applications.
To be fair to the telecos, it's said that under the law, a content developer has to go through a Content Provider (or PRSP, smthing like that). Well, it's about time such laws were removed, unless there is clear benefit for having them.
