Aki, So should we also expect a whole flurry of new software developers with new apps by the weekend ? ;) How many new developers do you think this will bring ? e-commerce sites ? I wait ... as I have been for the past several years. During which time BTW - the price of a 256k has fallen from 25000 shs to 3000shs. Is that still beyond the reach of techies ? Every once in a while you get pleasantly surprised, but where is the revolution ? Seacom just turned on the capacity yesterday. Circuits on the fiber couldn't be mapped before yesterday, and they are still doing that slowly. Testing has also not been completed fully, and most of it begins from yesterday. Interconnect points are just getting ready. IP routes take time to propagate as well, so expect some days for that. It's really a media launch, and over the next week you should expect people to slowly start turning on the capacity. Even the guys who have it, are testing before they plug it straight into their networks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "aki" <aki275@googlemail.com> To: "Skunkworks forum" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Sent: Friday, July 24, 2009 7:35:20 AM GMT +03:00 Iraq Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Benchmarking Seacom @ Hi David and all, I appreciate all the comments and with all due kind respect to everyone, I'm sorry to tell you that I see things much more differently. The issue of speeds, latencies, jitter, bandwidth etc is irrelevant, that comes with the fiber naturally. What I see is a terrible failure on our part. What I'm surprised though is that we accept this failure as a norm and for people who are understand networks etc to see other professionals accept the norm is terribly disturbing. However, what we should be asking ourselves is this " What did we NOT expect? ". For whatever reasons that entire community of telcos, network operators , service providers choose not to go simulatenous with the launch is upto them. For me, the writing is on the wall, clear. " DAY 2 of international fiber launch and 99% of kenya is still in the dark ages of the satellite era! " An excellent start and with plenty of excuses to back it up. Anway, Im on a timeout so will leave it there................................... Best Rgds, Aki. _______________________________________________ Skunkworks mailing list Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks Other services @ http://my.co.ke Other lists ------------- Announce: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks-announce Science: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/science kazi: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/admin/kazi/general

@Riyaz, I think you got me there. This was a *Media Launch*. And the techies all overlooked that? Isn't there some provider out there who can claim the Kenyan version of Guinness Book of Records as "having hooked up" on the cable on the day it was switched "on"? Such a farse! We were duped.lol -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

2 operators got connected yesterday. I hear one connected some subs to it yesterday night, but otherwise they're both still testing. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Odhiambo ワシントン" <odhiambo@gmail.com> To: "Skunkworks forum" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Sent: Friday, July 24, 2009 9:28:38 AM GMT +03:00 Iraq Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Benchmarking Seacom @Riyaz, I think you got me there. Bwana Bachani, Is my ISP one of those two operators? Just between you and me of course ;-) On Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 9:27 AM, Riyaz Bachani < riyaz.bachani@ke.wananchi.com> wrote:

@Riyaz, thnks much for the info. :-) You are calling me back from semi-retirement from lists and Im on a timeout. I think this whole Seacom affair has nothing to with Aki wanting faster speeds etc... Infact it has no direct benefit to me, I wish it did. BTW, I banned safcom, so I don't use it unless now they have shaped up. :-) I know you are a network guru like many others on the list and my experience also goes back to things like nodes and iplcs, half circuits etc. So am sure you can understand where I'm coming from. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General comment : By calling the Seacom a media lanch event does not clear anything. Again, networks do not operate in this manner, neither does routing. Business fact that service providers would want to stay ahead of the competition by being the first to delivery the fiber bandwidth to clients shows clearly where their need to stay ahead is. This element is missing from Seacom uptake and simultaneous launch.
