An idea submitted Safcom innovation site launched: IDEA owner no-where near the product ??
Hi Skunks A friend of mine tells me she submitted an idea on safcoms innovations a while back. It was marked as viable and suddenly the product was launched???!!! Now so many queries arise from this situation as even the idea owner is not recognized as the owner, does it mean submitting an idea makes a Safcom product/deal, dont they seek a deal to involve you in the product from the idea and many more questions. Simply put whats the protection to the owner of the idea or any legal take and are there no benefits from this? Mpesa is owned by Vodafone UK and Safaricom is an agent, like Vodacom SA. Details in their annual report. I was looking for an online copy of Safaricoms terms and conditions on submitions made to them. Anyway, it states that once you submit an idea to them, they own it, etc. Your pal is not the first to fall for this one. There's been the likes of Get it 411 and vehicle tracking. They are not wrong or evil or malicious. So long as they have a disclaimer that if you submit an idea to them that it becomes theirs and you proceed to submit an idea, then no-one is to blame. Safaricom is not our friend who should look out for us (despite the patriotic tune ). They are controlled by foreign 'investors' and the same goes for all the other telcos. . People, it is not only safaricom who do this. It happens the whole world over. Even google can poach your idea, I mean why pay you simply because you thought about it? I have very many ideas in on paper, well thought out, well documented, but if someone else actually realizes them, how can I prove that I was the initial innovator? Thats why the people who innovate start by licensing/patenting their stuff. In these videos he covers the cases of M-pesa and M-kesho; he does not deny nor confirm that the ideas came from Kenyans but he said that these ideas are "out there" for people to grab. But what I find "peculiar" is this - if a Kenyan presents the idea that wasnt in a "companyX" focus; and he/she backs it up with research as to why it will work in Kenya;;; I know its not hard for a Multi-International to seek a similar idea elsewhere so that they pay for it there rather than dealing with Kenyans ;; But why move to implement after someone (e.g a Kenyan) has mentioned it ? Why not move before ? It is a simple question.
