It's been an interesting start to the day. I got to learn that Amazon.com has been making inquiries about M-Pesa with a view to using it. And HTC have released the source for the Hero Kernel available at http://developer.htc.com. I hope the trend continues, we are at an inflection point. And not only that, Companies like Uchumi etc can sell goods to pple all over the country and beyond, and you could sell books to universities and high schools on a print to order basis. It could be a revolution in East Africa. Just think of what it would mean to have the power of ordering anything u want and having it delivered to you anywhere u are in East Africa.

delivery network thats the majic word.why did amazon suceed in the west and ali baba in china? Before internet there was mail order where people in rural midwest america received catalogues and goods were sent straight to their doors.in kenya delivery is expensive the least being ksh 500 i suggest (hapa safcom should be paying me) m-pesa outlets as drop off and delivery points as well as transaction centres .the challange is to us to create this network ki soft ware na ki wateja ware because who eles can for neither the govt nor business people have a clue and I.T companys are busy picking the low hanging fruits -to you! I don't want to sound pessimist, but why had it to take amazon.com to embrace the idea that people see its viability? Methinks the idea generated by skunkworks on working with mobile banking are a pointer in establishing confidentiality in this program or idea. Aki et al, have come up with innovative ideas which should revolutionize technology here. Let us recoup our thoughts and use these ideas to see the light of day. Just imagine amazon.com or ebay.com adapting a skunkworks idea for business. My dreams! On 24/10/2009, matere lusitche <kenyabizideas@gmail.com> wrote:

Matere you are absolutely right, the value add would be the delivery.Amazon has what it calls fulfillment centres (logistic centres) which are all over the US and when a client places an order, the nearest fulfillment centre to that client sends out the item using Fedex. In Kenya we could replicate this by using the various logistic centres of nakumatt, uchumi, tusky's etc,for books we can have a deal with authors and publishers to print a copy in request, that way they dont waste money prnting books that no one will ever read. Actually statistics show that 40% of books printed are never read simply because authors overestimate demand.

Am not saying that it cannot be done here. There is something funny about Kenyans. They will prefer to go buy out and buy a print copy of the Daily Nation while it is offered for free at Nation's website. Most people will prefer to travel to the City Centre for shopping while other alternatives exist, prefer to travel to an office when they could easily have sent in an email or called. There is a lot of emphasis on physical presence and physical execution of tasks. On 24/10/2009, John Maina <mwasjunior@gmail.com> wrote:

This is not necessary a problem, its how most kenyans are. Now, one can treat this as an obstacle to e-commerce and wait till kenyans change their habits, or one can use it as a business opportunity. video-commerce?

The biggest problem behind full implementation of e-commerce (purchase - payment - delivery) is that Kenya lacks a good physical address system. Some places are almost impossible to find without vague directions (e.g. that petrol station on Haile Selassie is still called Agip despite the fact that it isn't!) The planning ministry should take this up as a challenge to develop a robust physical addressing system such that any physical location can be easily located -- for example the British postcode system. This could also be extended to the road network so that given an address it is possible to figure out which road to take. On Mon, Oct 26, 2009 at 12:56 PM, Peter Karunyu <pkarunyu@gmail.com> wrote:

the city council has been numbering buildings in the city centre. so we now have number 10 koinange street or something similar.
Much as this is laudable, corporates already use Couriers, it's the rest of us.... Say you live next to Sarit, if you don't use Sarit centre as your locus, chances are, your house will be very difficult to find... Hence you will be asked to pick up your package from a central location. It does not help that all our street names are ill thought out, so you literally have to cram your way around, roads make no sense... e.g. Ralph Bunche road (named after a *person* with no guidance as to where it heads), breaks in the middle. So, if you want someone to drive from one location on the right, to the other on the left, they have to go through 4 other streets, before they end up on Ralph Bunche again. It does not help that there is no street furniture. It's basically a jungle... -- With Regards, Phares Kariuki | T: +254 734 810 802 | E: pkariuki@gmail.com | Twitter: kaboro | Skype: kariukiphares |

Matere, I could draft a concept paper, please send me your ideas and criticisms.

Hi All, I was wondering if this will extend to estates and in particular, houses.

of course it will, as long as the couriers get their cut. charges will probably be high to start with, and drop as more people adopt it. those most likely to first adopt it are those living in high income residential areas. probably aki has some experience in this field... true true john kenyans are not daft esp kenyan small entrepreneurs who will grab a chance to expand .i suggest we send a memorandam to this transport and courier companies as well as safaricom/zap and see their responce.
