Hi, We are planning to instal Orange broadband internet in the office. Would like to know if there is anyone who has used it and how reliable is it. George.

I am not a telecoms engineer but something tells me that the performance will depend on your location. I have seen this being discussed here also. I have seen differing performance with the Orange broadband. At some location along Ngong Rd, the connection was 3.1Mbps and the speed was really good - I mean the data transfer. I don't remember the actual figures. Testing from another location near K-Rep Bank in Riruta, I did not admire the transfer speeds at all. So I believe there is something to do with the Base Station near you and the usage originating from it. It could also be something to do with the radio signal level that you get. Again, I am not a telecoms engineer. This is just a layman's observation. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "Clothes make the man. We had a livebox (broadband turbo) brought to the office on 22nd April, technician showed up on 24th April. First had issues with the authentication, then when it was up and running it was pretty good for the 12 Computers on the LAN. We had quite a number of downtimes, and the worst was three days continuous (same authentication issue). Generally the speed is OK. *Cons* -Maybe individual but the authentication error really annoyed -Support is generally slow. -You'll need a firewall after the livebox to have proper control. *<HIJACK> Anybody used the orange USB dongle, how are the speeds on it? **</HIJACK>* 2009/5/13 George Njuguna <gnjuguna83@gmail.com>

@Brian, My response was based on experience with the USB dongle. If you need me to get some figures on the performance, then just let me know what application I need to use to gather consistent data for your curiosity and I will spare some time to do it. I have two friends at the mentioned locations from whom I can gather the data. PS: I am quite happy with Safaricom 3G and IIRC, MJ said that the billing model is going to change and I can only take that to mean "cheaper" KES/MB :) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "Clothes make the man. I have installed and used livebox for some time now,1. The hardware is not very good which may lead to many frequent down times and slow starts. How to overcome this If you have previously had any other adsl modem, just get to the settings and replace the adls user and pass with the orange username and pass. This ensures your hardaware is upto the task as you enjoy orange broadband. You can toss the livebox on the wall -esp if you buy it at 11k. :) I use around 10 comps and so far so good. 2. Evdo. Your location matters as said above, choose the huawei type -found it better than the pretty black ones. Connection may timeout from time to time again depending on your location. Hey, am looking for an ISP for an office that'll have like 3-5 comps. Will this Orange broadband be a good choice? And which speed(package) would be good for such number of users? Thanks On 5/13/09, joe mwirigi <joemwirigi@gmail.com> wrote:

I have tried the evdo in Embakasi. The connection is terrible, I was using the 256kbs down/128kbps up package. Speeds never went above 15kbs, at such speeds opening pages was difficult. But in town CBD its ok. May I just add that the customer care reps for orange are really below standard. those guys do not know the basics about the products they are selling.. 2009/5/13 Allan Kapten <allankapten09@gmail.com>
