Multiple internet connections
Rookie question: If I have wireless internet connection (via wifi), cabled internet connection and an internet connection via a, say, safcom modem, how do I tell which connection is being used by the system by default? Assume there are no restrictions in the ie connection options. I have my reasons for asking :)

You may be having a device where the connections are aggregated. I've never dealt with one that handles 3 outgoing circuits though, only two. In such type, it will depend on whether your option is load balance or failover. @Lawi, I'm assuming you're on windows. I thought you could right-click and specify one to be the default connection, and would have a tick next to the icon. Most operating systems with TCP/IP have what is called a Default Route or Default Gateway. You can see this with "ipconfig" from a CMD shell window. You can also see this with "netstat -r" where it will be the first route and is recognized by being all zeros "0.0.0.0" netmask 0.0.0.0. Let's say for example that a client is a Laptop computer. This laptop gets settings from the DHCP Server and the OS writes the route 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gateway 192.168.0.1. If you bring up another connection, for example the safcom modem, then the OS dutifully writes another "0.0.0.0" route now pointing to the Gateway given by the Safaricom GPRS network (via PPP).Now you've got two default routes (again shown by "netstat -r" ). The OS will chose the network to use based on the metric. wow, thanx for the quick reply. Actually I was asking coz am on a network where the office internet is really slow. I can use modem and remove the cable but in this case if I do so i will lose connectivity from the server I am connected to remotely (in the LAN). I am not sure about setting the default gw but I will try it. I have the option of win 7 and ubuntu, I can use either. Basically i want the cable interface to keep me connected to the LAN - and its DHCP by the way - while the modem keeps me connected to the outside world. Lawi, you can remove the default gateway on the LAN and put a static route to your server. That way you will maintain connectivity to the LAN and to the internet as well regards Patrick

Lawi,
you can remove the default gateway on the LAN and put a static route to your server. That way you will maintain connectivity to the LAN and to the internet as well
