PROJECT NATIONAL COHESION TARGET->10 million youths PLATFORM->All Media INITIAL IDEA BY AKI->an SMS based game communicating to a toll free number. Computer or onlinegames, online social networks restrict participation due to many reasons. I also think the game should be a rewarding process for those participating and due to the complex nature of some of the issues, it should run well over a number of years evolving each year to suit the economic enviroment. I think the design goal of such a project would be easy inter-action without the need for expensive or complex technologies on the user end. I'd definately put that large budget into an SMS based game. And adding more lines of thot for this week. Corrections are welcome. That out of each calamity that befalls people-kind all over the world, there emerges technology to further help understand the complexity of the problem. If you take any crises management systems, they were all born out of unfortunate circumstances and some born in places where there have been no such events . There is no fixed formula nor solution, because technology cannot accurately predict the next big quake nor can it accurately predict the outcome of any political process. You defined a complex issue with one line = Youth and promoting National Cohesion. As a game designer or whatever, ( well future tense at that ) I'd approach the problem in a different manner due to its complex nature. Avoid focus on one element of the problem. I'd be designing a game on this : " I Love my Country ! ". This game would cover many aspects of why one loves and would protect it from self destruction. And each time the youth are able to protect his/her country via the SMS based game, they would be rewarded for thinking of ways to save it. Each day, one problem would be presented in the game and the youth must figure out the puzzle to claim a price and have fun in the process. I think there is enough talent on this list to build such a game system. I'd still put the game on an SMS service because no other platform provides cheap and quick access. Then use radio, tv or other means to create awareness and get thousands into the game. Hi Those are Akis thoughts.I have been mandated by a potential donor to look for ideas on how to bring about national cohesion in Kenya. Some of the questions i am looking to answer are:- (1)What binds us together as kenyans? (2)What form of technology can be accessible by a majority of youths? (3)What does national cohesion really mean to us? (4)How can we as an IT community create technologies Lets own this project in the future it could mean change for us as a country and IT opportunities for all techies out there...So wat are you thoughst?

Hello @Waihiga, thanks for that but the credit goes to you for the initial thoughts. I just brought in the suggestion of a game. Allow me a few comments about this proposed project for the listers. I believe finding a long lasting solution to awareness especially at youth level in any country to be the biggest project of the times. It outbeats any project or solution that helps during a crises or after. What we are now talking about is the long term awareness that would lead to better judgements and decision making. I sincerely believe that we are now at a stage in our tech advancement to first try out our projects at home. We have problems, each and every person knows that but solutions are very difficult nor non-existent. If we can develop a model for Kenya, I believe we can do so for many countries that have to deal with youth problems similar to ours. I'm certain that the brilliant minds in kenya and especially on this list can come together on the base project. In principle am in with the project and will ensure to give it time despite my crazy schedules and not because I suggested the game but because I know we can do something using technology which is our area of speciality. How can we take this forward? Ladies and Gentlmen, the floor is open to everyone. Rgds. On Sat, Apr 10, 2010 at 2:42 PM, waihiga mwaura <waihigamwaura@gmail.com> wrote:

what about an online interactive multiplayer game like world of warcraft with themes on cultural integration and tolerance?perhaps the only good thing that come from the makmende hype is the fact that most kenyan youth of different backgrounds spend a sizable amount of time online.this can be exploited to make them aware of each others culture in an interesting and informative way without having to change their main hobby i.e surfing the net. an sms based game may require one not only to spend a proportionately large amount of pocket money on credit, but it;s less interactive and 'fun', if you know what i mean.plus it would mean leaving facebook or whatever site they are browsing for a fraction of a minute to check phones which is not a very attractive idea. just my 2 cents on the matter but it;s a good idea.infact the best i;ve heard this year. This would definetely work. . .I think. . . .ave always wanted a system where I can update my twitter status via sms and get my mentions via the same. . . .I had hoped yu would have gone the social media way but it appears they would rather join the price wars. . . .a game involving text and a social site like twitter would catch on pretty quick and most important of all it should be free.. . . yu had the free sms thing goin to make an app that links a user with their twitter account would be easy (I think. . . aint much of a coder) this 'free' traffic would eventually work for them and increase revenue and valuable social data. . .I know am lamenting about my failed hopes and marketing scheme for a provider I dont work for but if we can fuse sms with a web interface I think we will nail it. . . Thnks Gentlemen for the thoughts. I also think we need to clarify that this project is not about code alone, anyone and everyone can get involved with it. The project is complex but do-able is our challenge. I break it down into a very basic diagram and define as follows : ****************************************** * PROJECT GAME FRAMEWORK * **************************************** * THINK TANK GROUP * ------------------------------------------------- * CODE GROUP * ------------------------------------------------- * PROJECT EXECUTE PLATFORM GROUP *------------------------------------------------- ******************************************** We would need to build the concept game framework. The framework would allow us to integrate to any situation presented to the project. - THINK TANK GROUP : Heart of the framework. A group of people who think about making the games interesting to youth, creating dynamic ways to generate interest around problems and workable solutions. There are a possible 365 game scenarios just for the first year. - CODE GROUP : The code group already has 3 possible design and deployment scenarios. SMS, Web Based and Twitter Based. These all will only execute if the think tank group have content. - PROJECT EXECUTE PLATFORM GROUP : Possibly partner with telcos, organizations, donors, Tv & Radio. The list is endless. Listers, if you believe this project can be done, which group will you be part of? Or if you have a suggestion or contribution to make any changes, please do communicate them. :-) Rgds.

@Waihiga, as you have noticed the lack of response to this thread probably means that listers are quite tied up with other projects or commited to their own innovative projects. That framework diagram has actually been given me the best feedback because your project, despite its very very complex nature, was not entirely about technology. One did not need to be a code guru to volunteer thoughts eg within say the think tank group. I think the game idea and project is too early for its time. And a complex project cannot be done by a handful of people nor specific to just one talent. However, please do continue on your seach for answers and technologies that can help address complex problems and I wish you success. Time constraints unfortunately do not allow me to go deeper into thoughts/ideas on a complex project besides what I already have suggested or contributed. Skunks is a great tech community resource for many and I hope you will find suggestions and ideas to your projects from this list. With Kind Rgds. :-)

@aki lack of response doesnt necessarily mean lack of intrest. . . think guys are tired of talking and are waiting for someone to start something and then they hop onto the bandwagon. . . problem is everyone is waiting for someone else. . . am very willing to work on the twitter/socialmedia + sms angle . . . just dont know where to start or who to approach. . . . @Mark, I do apologise if my mail sounded along the lines of lack of interest though I think I put down the reasons to lack of response by listers to probable commitments, which is totally understandable. I'm very glad Maina and yourself contributed your ideas which makes Waihiga aware of the possibilites. I'd suggest that you connect with him on further progress and I hope you read the contribution from @Tonee. It could be a great start and wish you guys all the best. :-) PS : If you guys ever use the simple game framework I suggested, please let me know if it works. While I had a heap of work to clear, I spent the whole sat afternoon thinking/jotting down the framework and tried a few ideas with it. Hope it helps. Rgds.
