I happen to own an old Lenovo t61, which I bought not more than 6 months ago. Why an old 2nd-hand machine ? They are all widescreens. Whither "tallscreens" ? My old t61 has a native screen res of 1600x1050. I hardly ever have to scroll. Before the t61 I owned a DELL D600 with a native screen res of 1400x1050, the only reason I left her for the Lenovo was her processor speed. She was slow. Otherwise we were headed somewhere ;-) . It really is the case these days that you don't need anything more than USB3 and some sort of video (thunderbolt/DVI) port on a new machine. I haven't even had an Ethernet socket or DVD drive for the past 3 years and haven't missed either of them except maybe once or twice 2 years ago. Ironically, one of my favorite ports on my MacBook Air is the SD card slot. That is actually a nice-to-have for getting photos off of my camera without fiddling with a USB cable. If I was going to buy a non-Mac laptop or even desktop right now, the only expansion requirement I would have is USB3. IBM invented the 8086 family of processors in the early 1980s after all. I either go for a Thinkpad if that is within budget or acquire an Ultrabook (or both). That is if you prefer the P.C platform. Otherwise buy a Macintosh. IBM Thinkpads / Ideapads are not pretty but their hardware is quite decent, better than everything else out there. Some more hardcore guys actually get a Mac for the hardware and install GNU / Linux (Free / NetBSD maybe for their software needs). I write software for a living and when the time came for me to replace my *second* Lenovo after leaving University, I settled for an Ideapad z570<http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Z570-i7-1024-AYU-2670QM-2-2GHz-4GB-500GB-15-6-HDMI-Laptop-/110842765885?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item19cebe623d#ht_7300wt_905> which has an aluminium casing and a HDMI port among other things (64 bit core i7 intel processors, 750 Gb harddisk and 8Gb RAM). It only cost me U.S. dollars 530 (around Kshs. 55k using the time's foreign exchange rates) to get a manufacturer refurbished one from Ebay ....... Martin. Ironically, one of my favorite ports on my MacBook Air is the SD card slot. That is actually a nice-to-have for getting photos off of my camera without fiddling with a USB cable.
If I was going to buy a non-Mac laptop or even desktop right now, the only expansion requirement I would have is USB3. All those other ports just add weight and size.

Screen resolutions, it seems, have gone the way of skirt lengths - shorter, and only so to entertain.
My question, or request, then is to all listers who sell/advertise laptops - is there a laptop freshly out of the production line that could satisfy my quest for a 1600x1050 screen res and is still comfortably light ? Just asking.
PS : even a 1400x1050 will do.
