Re: [Skunkworks] BEST OUTDOOR WIFI AP.

Hi everyone,,, Hp ur taking it easy even with the monday blues, Thanks for all the information everyone has managed to offer here. - Kipng'etich Kamau (lol) for tht information about how to position the AP's and the comparision on Picostation and Nanostation in terms of perfomance. And for mentioning the wifi distribution in a wimax kind of way (which is what am avoiding at all cost at the moment). And the recommendation on antennae gains for this kind of setting and finally the contacts of that supplier. - Job and Peter am targeting close to 300 houses, but I mentioned 100 houses to give you a guage on kind of power I need on that particular AP. Bt thanks for clearing that I cant achieve that with just one AP. Which I agree. Am running a Zyxel WIFI gateway which has a small printer than I can use to print out Airtime tokken. However the range on its inbuilt AP can only hit my next door neighbour with 2-3 signal at the moment. This is where the need for a more powerful AP has risen from and the info above is priceless. Has anyone used TP LINK and EnGenius products. Let me know how they compair to Ubiquiti products like nano and picostations. * * <http://www.engeniustech.com/> On Mon, Dec 17, 2012 at 7:40 AM, peter Ngali <peterngali@gmail.com> wrote:
Dear Dave,
I trust you are well.
What you want to achieve is not possible with one or four antennae. You need to come up with a set up where by you can manage all the clients from one point and at the same time having them connection to one omni genius network, though with so many antennas. You may need to consider antennae that can do WDS.
To achieve this you may use Mikrotiks and or Nano stations.

Hey beautiful faces,
I would like a first hand experienced advice on an outdoor wifi AP that is capable of transmitting in walls and stuff "say in an estate with 100 houses or more." I realy do not want trial error devices tht have no testimonial from guyz here.
Will really appreciate. Also let me know where i can buy one and how much it costs.
Thanks guyz.

Hi Ti Dave, You seem to be doing a massive project here. As I normally say, the laws of physics simply do not allow you to get away with 'one AP with massive power' in setting of 100 or more houses. The AP might be powerful, but sadly the wifi adapters on the PCs, laptops and mobiles may not have the same power to cover the distance to the AP. My advice is to engage the pros (like Swift Tech) and do some comprehensive site surveys to determine the signal coverage requirements. Ideally, you will come out of that exercise with a BoQ which you can use to shop for the wireless kit. Kind regards, Bernard On Mon, Dec 17, 2012 at 11:57 AM, Ti Dave <dave.kirirah@gmail.com> wrote:

Good Advice Bernard.. .. Am now aware tht I cannot pull this off with one AP but I can start small build up the base station as the client base builds. But still I wouldn't mind experimenting with the few good units tht have been mentioned in here. Kind regards, On Mon, Dec 17, 2012 at 4:31 PM, Bernard Wanyama <bwanyama@eis.co.ug> wrote:

Dave, Highly unlikely you will provide a good service with fewer APs as you have been advised. Also note that the further away the clients are, the poorer the signal and the lower the tx rate meaning the AP will be forced to transmit at the lowest tx rate of the connected clients. You are better off having a survey and distributing the APs in the area. Also, there is a max allowable power you can transmit (check with CCK - maybe 350mW). So equipment will mostly comply if brought through right channels. On 17 Dec 2012 16:38, "Ti Dave" <dave.kirirah@gmail.com> wrote:
