Waibochi did not do anything to change the IT landscape in Kenya.IU can say that again, because from where I sit, I haven't gotten in contact with anything from VC. Is this because Virtual City won a Nokia funding? http://cio.co.ke/events/details/30-kenya-ict-awards-gala-night.html http://icthalloffame.com/brian%20longwe.htm So you decide. I am not sure I agree with the inductees in the icthalloffame.com link, with the exception of Brian Munyao Longwe. So, the list I support: 1. James Rege 2. Njeri Rionge, 3. The Late Juma Okech, 4. George Okado and Crowther Pepela (I don't know who these two are) Add the following: 5. Dr. Shem Ochuodho (he calls himself the father of Internet in Kenya) 6. Brian Munyao Longwe (my nominee) 7. Michuki Mwangi (my nominee) Why Eng. James Rege comes before Dr. Ochuodho beats me though. I can't tell off the top of my head what he did to top the list. Dr. Ochuodho started off what was then called ARCC (African Regional Centre for Computing), to give Kenya the first Internet connectivity (I think) at 64kbps...hmmm, I am not sure but I believe both Michuki and Brian remember what the actual bandwidth was. For those who might be interested in the history of Kenya - the 1st IP dedicated link from Kenya was in 1995 via ARCC - to the best of my knowledge was a 9600Kbps link from then KPTC- but cannot verify. Prior to this were mainly email services connecting to FIDONET network (uucp dialup providing store and forward email services) servers abroad circa 1990-1991. see http://www.fidonet.org/inet92_Randy_Bush.txt for FIDONET history The NSRC has keep an archive of the emails that have marked the turning points of Internet in most of the world including Kenya. True. That seems to be what some folks are doing. The OP brought up a very noble question for this community. @Wash, the selection category should also look at current times, not just past achievements. I'd nominate @Mich for these reasons : a) He has not held a public office ( not that am aware of, has he? ) b) He does not get a fat salary ( courtesy of GOK, ) no benefits nor other allowances. ( I think @mich still uses a swift email account? ) c) He is not appointed any govt sector/senior position through which he would have made a lot of things happen, although he was the receipent of an internationally recognised position in his area of speciality. I believe @Mich is the silent soldier that deserves not only recognition but also some perks that would allow him to be more involved in the important internet sector in KE. Me thots. Rgds. @Aki, To the best of mu knowledge, Michuki has done all that he's done voluntarily. Just as you say, he always went out of his way to ensure these things happen, sacrificing his personal time. He put in so much time during the setup of KIXP, and eventually the J-Root Servers in KE. He did not earn any salary for these, and that's why I feel the his recognition and induction into the HOF is a good way to appreciate his efforts. @James, I think Erik is also a candidate for the recognition however his segment is more of the donor based area in which he is already a very recognised person for his work. His efforts and hard work are the pipeline for many involved at the ihub. :-) The only unfortunate part I believe is this, though corrections are welcome: @Erik also derives benefits from iHub in whatever manner whether directly or by proxy therefore that places a conflict of interest in such a nomination. It would be the equivalent of saying Hon Dr Ndemo ( who is the PS ) did something special to get the fiber to kenya which I assume he did ( Bringing Teams together? ). Unfortunately his positon creates a conflict of interest because the action of getting the fiber was the mandate of the Ministry under which his office is covered, I'd presume. I hope that am making sense here. Unless the nomination categories mean that you can nominate individuals whoever has achieved some great level of being instrumental in that change, whether directly or proxy benefit ( eg salaries, perks, funding, postion etc ) then I see no issues at all. Besides @Mich, I'd also nominate @Erik. These are me thots, corrections welcome. Cheers. On Tue, Nov 2, 2010 at 4:14 PM, James Muendo <timrick@gmail.com> wrote:
