iPhone CDMA on Orange network

I have been wondering for a while why Orange Kenya does not sell CDMA iPhones yet they have the only active CDMA network in the region and as far as I can tell it is on the same tech as the American one (CDMA 2000) This would ensure lock in of subscribers and allow subsidizing of handsets. The subscribers would be happy on an non-congested network, assured revenues for the network since there is no unlocking or sim swap business and utilization of the network that only seems to be used by modem dongles. Win win? -- Regards, Mark Mwangi markmwangi.me.ke

CDMA is a legacy technology and everybody is moving to LTE. So, getting more CDMA phones on the system would only be a burden in the future. Verizon in the US is dropping CDMA next year and I bet Orange Kenya will be off the technology by the end of 2015: http://www.extremetech.com/mobile/150068-verizon-plans-to-drop-cdma-from-pho... --- OpenStack for Africa: http://signup.kili.io Musings: https://twitter.com/varud About Adam: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Fri, May 31, 2013 at 7:06 PM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

Mark, Your assumption on subscriber behaviour in Kenya is wrong. CDMA technology has practically failed to pick up locally. At some point when network congestion was all the hype, Telkom's CDMA network had impressive KPI stats, but that never translated into any gains in terms of subscriber numbers. That aside, Telkom's CDMA network embarrassingly lacks some common basic services (some, due to technological limitations). The subscriber numbers have drastically fallen in spite of the phasing out of fixed lines. PS : I have maintained a personal Telkom CDMA line since the inception of the service to date.

Hello Mark This is so true However the management at orange doing stupid stuff This will not be happening anytime soon. Rumor has it they intend to sell their CDMA network

How about having Equipment which have reached EOL (End of life) with the equipment vendor, I doubt they would do that, it will just die naturally or as Adam says everyone is moving towards LTE. regards Patrick On Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 2:17 PM, Cynthia Wahome <cwahome@jambo.co.ke> wrote:

What I see when I look at the CDMA network is an easy way to make money. An iphone or even a decent Android smartphone subsidized heavily by the provider and workin on only the CDMA network would allow the provider to milk the subscriber for a much longer time than on GSM where options are many. Locked in subscriber (using technology) and assured sales mean steady income.
From what I see around me, most users want a phone that will do pretty much what the iphone does. take good pictures, connect to the net , make calls etc with as few frills, bells and whistles as possible. The less they know about how it all works the better.

Just to elongate this thread, Apple still makes CDMA phones that seem compatible with Orange Kenya's network but still no push by Orange. http://orange.co.ke/Orange%20iPhone%205s/ios/iphone-5s/specs/index.html I think I have just given up on these guys. I am not sure how CDMA iPhones would be compatible with Orange, as they are designed custom for each network (such as Verizon) or other CDMA networks across the world. Unless Orange Kenya orders CDMA iPhones, but seeing that they no longer invest in CDMA, not sure this will happen. Either way, I think the iPhone deal with Orange was just a total waste and other networks would have pushed the product better. On Tue, Feb 4, 2014 at 12:44 PM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello Mark Orange is not really concerned with its CDMA network. I tend to believe the following, however i stand to be corrected 1) CDMA has been very successful in the US,i also believe it can succeed here(ofcourse with the proper management, not some french clowns) CDMA coverage in kenya is almost everywhere and there is no competition 2) its easier to upgrade from CDMA to LTE.Yes then initial cost may be expensive, but the returns will definately come back.if i am the only CDMA provider i can lock my subscribers very well without me worrying of them leaving me Orange would have brought enough CDMA iphones and they wud be surprised how many kenyans wud by them.but alas leave it to the french to mess things up big time!!! 3) Mark, you are very right.these guys will continue fighting with queen bee a war which they will never win. Although on another note,i must say Orange has pretty good 3G internet speeds
