Wash, That trend is taking shape as we speak. This has been initiated by the launching of the Tegra 2 Dual-Core processor by Nvidia and is used by the Motorola Xoom (a tablet) and the LG Optimus 2X (My next android phone) at CES 2011 in Las Vegas. The fone comes with a 1Ghz dual core processor and eats the iphone4 for lunch. It's only a matter of time before we see PC-grade processors in smart phones. Very exciting I must say. Kiania D. Every time I hear "The Cloud" I feel like throwing up what is a cloud does't it have servers and hard disks and processor? Why do we make it look like it's any different from the kind of computing we have now? Any organization having centralized apps at the server including mail, has a cloud. Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UYa6gQC14o - I love Larry Ellison :-) Kiania D. On Wed, Jan 26, 2011 at 7:32 AM, Muoki Maingi <mmviqtah@gmail.com> wrote:

Get your heads out of "the cloud" :-) Well if you are looking at the future of computers take into consideration Kinect kind of interfaces and voice recognition.the keyboard could be headed for extinction which will add to the fuctionality of deviced. Someone who has not been in a programming class could ask a gadget to develop an app through their voice when in traffic..... Muoki is right - The cloud means different things to different people. @David - You're bound to nauseate, when you refuse to accept a terminology that was probably not taught to you in class, Frank Gillett and Larry Ellison will not convince IT professionals to adopt another term to suite their opinions. e.g Google remains a cloud(there I said it!!) technology vendor because organizations can outsource mail server services from them, instead of having to deal with competencies and budgets of running their own data centres. Its the new term on the block..... you either work with it or stick to the old term (location-independent computing), like the guy who still grins at computers because he thinks they could only make his manual way of book keeping more difficult if not complicated.

@Patrick Sir, Granted you could be right. Cloud is new terminology could it be describing something we have always had? When Wananchi or Africa-Offline offered hosted mail using Zimbra or Exim wasn't this cloud services? How different is it from what google mail is doing? FYI consider the latest cloud solution be deployed by a leading Telco provider do you what the BoQ has: - - Cisco Servers and Switches. - Blade servers. - EMC Storage. FYI since it's being sold as cloud and not individual components? Pricetag $15M (gasp). This is equipment any serious enterprise is running, but for one we call it a cluster and the other is a cloud. I am amazed at how gullible we are by new terminology and marketing mambo jambo. There's no trend here it's the same old stuff under a new name. Are we confusing cloud computing and network computing here? Consider http://www.jolicloud.com/ : what are your thoughts on this?

Again, spot on Kiania, infact on the February issue of CIO East Africa, you will find that I have brought forth the same argument. Cloud computing is best suited for sales people as doesn't reveal actual services offered. Even web hosting is cloud computing!

@ Dennis - http://www.brighthub.com/environment/green-computing/articles/68785.aspx We're discussing the role of cloud based services in smart phones with pc-grade processors, where is the sales team coming in here or does the term itself elicit a pricetag? if so, I don't see one on the Jolicloud OS which utilizes cloud based services.

Rather than tell us it's in the cloud, tell us what it is and what it does. For phones though, the term is more agreeable

@David, The iPhone 4 you mention has been in production for more that a year now, and the phones you talk about are not even in production. It is not fair to compare the two. Maybe you could compare Motorola Zoom and the LG Optimus with the next generation of iPhone. And no ones beat the iPhone interface. Haters.
