Hi guys. I am a newbie in the IT field taking a 4 week CCNA course at New Horizon. I am looking for some supplementary Cisco materials. Any recommendations? Secondly, has anyone done the 604 - 802 exam? How would you compare it to the alternative of sitting for two papers, ICND 1 and ICND 2? Does the splitting make them easier? Finally, does anyone know of any Kenyan CCIE? Better still are they on skunkworks?

Cisco will give you manuals (about 6 of them if I remember correctly). These are given as part pf the course. ICND1 had about 3 manuals, same as ICND2. Plus I guess they can give you a copy of Packet Tracer to use for simulation.
Secondly, has anyone done the 604 - 802 exam? How would you compare it to the alternative of sitting for two papers, ICND 1 and ICND 2? Does the splitting make them easier?
I'd say it is better to do them separately. It's easier that way. However, if you have a photographic memory with enough film embedded, and had gotten enough practice, then you can give the unified exam a shot.
Finally, does anyone know of any Kenyan CCIE? Better still are they on skunkworks?
They must be reading you:-) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

For a newbie, sit for the 2 papers. You just can't hack CCNA in a month without any prior experience. AFRALTI offer the course in 6 months with lots of hands on labs. This would be a better way to do it. There are numerous forums online on both 640-802 and the paper 1 and paper 2 track. Hi James, I'd recommend taking a longer time than 1 month to study your CCNA. (personal recommendation is 6 months.) This is because the CCNA is the foundation for everything you may do in the future. It is better to be a CCNA than to be CCNA certified (if you catch my drift). You can use dynamips for hands on experience. If you can get CBT Nuggets or Knowledgenet videos to supplement the books, even better. After studying for 6 straight months, do the single exam, its cheaper! When cisco used to publish the number of CCIE's per country, Kenya had 5. Check Dimension Data, COPY cat and UN. Don't know if any are on the list. Given that the mobile CCIE lab was due in Kenya in august, there might be more. Good luck! @James If you Want to make it Big in CCNA Exam simulation will Do u a Big deal, I did My CCNA Certification in that same place early this year, for sure six weeks is still short time to Do a CCNA exam so just a word of advice dont rush to do the exam make sure u've mastered the concepts well before you go for the exam coz 83% is not an easy target especially for Cisco affiliated exams. secondly for Monetary purposes go for single Exam it will be cheaper it only costs 19k On Tue, Sep 14, 2010 at 12:17 PM, John Ndambuki <johnmndambuki@gmail.com>wrote:

For the exams I would prefer u go for the 640-802 once coz of cost.
For the CCIE's just as mentioned Dimension Data has 2,UN has 1 ,1 is a consultant and the remaining one is with Cisco San Jose(not sure),worldwide there are less than 30K CCIE's,so you have a great future ahead.I am working on mine b4 the number hits 30K.So welcome aboard.

Its an exciting and rewarding journey have fun, take in the sights. there are quite a number of high level networkers on the skunkworks list, appropriate questions will be answered. on whether to take the two papers or not :it depends. Personally I'd go for the single paper. Its cheaper but requires you to put in more work upfront. It covers broader content. if you're very new in the field I'd suggest you break it down and take the two papers separately. remember its a journey, don't frustrate yourself before you begin. If you have money to burn, pay for the exam, go see what it looks like:-) on books, now those are expensive. I suggest you head on to safari books online, all cisco press titles are available cheaply. If you are sponsored by an organization I can recommend a list of books otherwise otherwise the internet is really your best friend. JGitau, Thanks. Kindly send me the list of books. I would wish to take a look at them. About the CCIE's I just want to talk to one or two of them and hear what they have to say to a newbie. Two books I consider absolute must haves: Routing TCP/IP Volume I Routing TCP/IP, Volume II The Protocols (TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1) The books above are great foundation books. They can be a bt over the top so you need to take your time with them. understand the technologies, ask questions, they are not very cisco centric but come from cisco press. specifically for the CCNA: CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide (CCNA Self-Study, 640-811, 640-801) - Wendell Odom. For a list of other books: http://www.ciscopress.com/markets/detail.asp?st=44711 Now the trick with networking is staying motivated, being a bit curious be ready to sacrifice especially if you're shooting for the ccie. You need to be all rounded (trust me you'll script and have to deal with people, storage and other 'not so network stuff') and patient with yourself. If you feel out of it, share with the list or someone that understands ..... other than that its easy fun stuff.... If you want to hang out with some CCIE's umm...add me to gtalk and or unicast (Email me directly) your cell phone number .... I know a couple JGitau On Thu, Sep 16, 2010 at 10:25 PM, James Flint <safi.flint@gmail.com> wrote:
