MSG -- The problem that never was...

So I came across: http://www.nation.co.ke/Features/saturday/Why+you+should+say+no+to+MSG+/-/12... which, 5 minutes of wikipedia and google reduces to a pile of ash. Here's a good counter article http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2005/jul/10/foodanddrink.features3

I have and always will avoid products containing MSG, artificial flavor enhancers and preservatives like the plague. In my opinion its a problem on the rise as a result of food processing companies putting profits way ahead of the wellbeing of its consumers. The choice should be left with the consumer, but they have a right to know "through easy to understand product labeling" what harmful chemicals are put in such products and the levels of such chemicals. It could be acceptable for a product to have small levels but the real question here is where that line is crossed between what is acceptable or unacceptable. A clear example is the poison milk scandal in china in 2008 that had around 300,000 victims http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Chinese_milk_scandal . I support the labeling of cigarettes with the risk of "respiratory health effects" as a result of direct and indirect smoking and the choice being left with the consumer. Its a shame the same is not being done for other products that have excessively high levels like soda that has between 8% - 13% sugar. I read this same article and had all the reason to think about it, but nothing in the article made me feel threatened. It's good that you've done some work for those of us who were yet to google deep. The counter-article is quite long - possibly someone paid to do it to help the MSG business remain relevant. Personally, I like the true taste of food. If Royco has MSG, then I can tell you we are all doomed by this MSG thing! Hopefully it doesn't. MOST manufacturers either: 1: do not list all ingredients . Currently, this is legally required in very few countries. 2: list chemical / e-number codes / nonsense marketing jargon. Few consumers bother figuring what these mean anyway, and when something goes wrong, the manufacturer can blame the consumer for "being ignorant". @Wash, see "flavour enhancers" on that Royco? Marketing nonsense for "MSG". check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Flavour_enhancers (like many other manufacturers, they used to label it correctly as "MSG" in the previous years' packaging) That being side, there are FEW consumables available today that do not have MSG ("flavour enhancers") in sufficient quantity. Good luck avoiding this stuff. //MB On 10/1/12, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:
