Dear skunks, If you remember a few weeks ago I raised an issue regarding storage space in a clients network. The thing is that nearly all the computers appeared to have full disks. The network is about 10 users, all running Windows 7, with Kaspersky Internet security up to date and the scans done. Now it appears that the HDDs are actually not full. Majority of them are 320 GB HDD and they would show that they have like 1.5 or 7 GB free, though you cant really tell what is taking the space. Then, after some time, some of the PCs go back to show the real status, like 70 Gb free etc. A PC would be showing that its full in the morning, then by lunch time it shows the real status. I suspect some viral activity or malware. Anyone seen this before? I think you also need to ensure that Windows Updates is enabled. It could be malware that's propagating itself through the network (seeing that the behaviour has been observed in all the clients) by executing some security hole in Windows 7. I once worked with a server on which updates were disabled because it was said to run highly critical systems. After it got hit by a worm, my boss finally heeded my advice to have Windows updates enabled on it and we've never had any incident on it due to the updates, plus the vulnerability was eliminated. I had experienced a similar issue on a network with over 1000 pc. It was being caused by a error with Symantch antivirus server, repeatedly pushing out the same antivirus def files. Server was rebuilt, antivirus clients were re-deployed and issue was resolved. Another issue we had was offline files not syncing properly with file server, when a clients on portable machines machine joins the network, creating multiple duplicates. I would recommend using a tool like "Tree Size pro, to give you reports "on directory level" in realtime on disc usage on clients machines on your network. Hi guys, I got to use TreeSize and it has actually given me a very good picture of the disks. For instance on 2 machines, the paging file had been allocated 30GB and another 40GB. I was able to change that to 2 and 4GB, thereby freeing a lot of good space. Where that came from I have no idea. The first thing I did was to download and run the Kaspersky rescue disk but after scanning I came up with blanks (its actually a Linux distro I think, a live CD running KDE, which got me wondering, is there a Win live CD? I digress) So, the next thing that I have noted from most of the PCs is that they have very large zip files under the C:\users\...\AppData\local\Temp folders. These are the culprits. I am tempted to clean this temp folder but am not sure if these are important files or not. I am trying to get a screenshot and I will post it here for advise. Any takers? Some Jua Kali techie. The general rule of the thumb, IIRC, was that swap (aka Pagefile) whould be 2.5*RAM. More is good of course, but generally useless. Swap on disk has no dignificant benefit really, as it serves to just slow down the machine. The disk speed is not as fast as RAM. However, putting swap file/pagefile on an SSD has obvious benefits. If someone needed more memory, they should have bought more RAM:-)

They are temp files and will not affect any programs fatally. You should read about Windows Temp files, hata wewe:-) Anyway, it's easy to start in Safe Mode and delete all temp files.
