Self-help groups are a large-scale phenomenon in Africa. Participation varies by country, typically from 50-90% of the total population. These groups, called "chama" ("association" in Swahili), help their members save and borrow in a rotational manner. Chama also offer a way for people to exchange skills or barter tasks. This aspect of skill exchange is the focus of the project. The project is to help design and to implement a method for self-help groups to better learn about and exchange skills within a group and between connected groups. The method will use IVRs and SMS to act as a communication channel. The applicant must be a current student at a US college or university and have a strong computer science background. Advanced undergraduates, Masters, and early PhDs are encouraged to apply. Publication of results will be strongly encouraged. Presentation of work at a Nokia Lab in the US will be required at the end of the internship. Facility with Django/Python, Perl, basic bash and cron scripts, basic Unix system administration, and MySQL are required and will be evaluated as part of the application process. Scope of the internship: - January: two week visit to Kenya to meet the team and to better understand how self-helps group work in sub-Saharan Africa. - Feb-May/June (end of your term): begin project development (5-10 hours/week) - June-Aug (three months): finish implementation, and field test prototype in collaboration with social scientists in Kenya - Sep-Dec: prepare academic paper on work (5-10 hours/week) Please only apply if you can travel to Kenya in January and during the summer, and can be an intern during the spring and fall semesters. Applicants should sent a succinct, single-page cover letter and a CV to Jonathan Ledlie (jonathan.ledlie@nokia.com) by Friday November 20. Please send two reference letters and a copy of your transcript with your application. The intern will be selected by December 11. The internship is paid. Both trips to Kenya will be paid for. Housing in Kenya will be arranged and paid for. -----Inline Attachment Follows----- _______________________________________________ kictanet mailing list kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke http://lists.kictanet.or.ke/mailman/listinfo/kictanet This message was sent to: kiriinya2000@yahoo.com Unsubscribe or change your options at http://lists.kictanet.or.ke/mailman/options/kictanet/kiriinya2000%40yahoo.co...

The applicant MUST - be a current student at a US COLLEGE... Well ? Or may be its a typo ?

its not a typo error ,,,,,needs to be a student at a usa college On Wed, Nov 4, 2009 at 3:08 PM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

Here be dragons. I'm not at all surprised by the ad, it is typical of the so-called ICT4D sector (ICT For Development), and the development sector in general (the "NGO-industrial" complex as some would call it). This is the basic modus operandi: - after consulting with non-local experts, fly in a non-local person for a few weeks of training/familiarization - the person recruits a few locals (part of "keeping it real"), mostly as drivers, admin assistants etc - based on this crash-course, the person does "their thing" and becomes an expert of sorts - results are published and discussed, mostly in non-academic blogs/journals - everyone claps and is in awe of the progress (and of the newly-minted expert) - the newly-minted expert joins the cadre of non-local experts, ready to dispense their advice to future non-local ICT4D-wannabes - rinse and repeat My apologies to the few truly good apples in ICT4D for the broad characterizations. There was an article the other day about how to involve locals in ICT4D projects and I mentioned that there are quite a number of ICT4D projects in Kenya yet almost none of them see it fit to have any sort of significant involvement with the local tech community (methinks skunkworks-ke would be a decent place to start). The only visible ICT4D project I'm aware of that has a significant number of locals in positions of influence is Appfrica (http://appfrica.net/ and http://appfricalabs.com/), based in Uganda. Google-search on ICT4D and witness the increasing talk of "abundant opportunities" in Africa's mobile sector. It reminds me of early "explorers" (Stanley, Livingstone et al) and their talk of Africa's abundant natural resources. Then the talk was cloaked in "spreading Christianity", now it is cloaked in "spreading development". My apologies again to the few truly good apples in ICT4D. I stand to be corrected, I really hope I'm wrong and that it is simply paranoia from the falling temperature outside. saidi On Wed, Nov 4, 2009 at 9:26 AM, Edward Obiko <edobie@gmail.com> wrote:

My 2 cents tells me Nokia would prefer to get students in US colleges to do this. For one its a process and a half to get past the tough US immigration laws to allow aliens to work in US. A student in a US college would in this case already have a permit that allows them to work 20hrs a week in US among other things. Be that as it may.....they can still use local people and have the findings and presentations done in the US. I dont think...an odiero with only two weeks familarisation can do a better job than a local who really understands the situation. I agree with saidimu's analogy. From what i understand is part of the work will be done in the US so that would disqualify the so called locals. Coz for Nokia to pick a local, they would have to show the local has extra ordinary abilities. But again, thats not cast in stone as in there are many loop holes that can be exploited, so i guess if they really want to Nokia can actually get locals to do the same thing.
That would lead me to believe also that maybe there is a third party sponsor to this project that has specified that its for US college students. i think u guyz havent read the advert well, that is not nokia africa advertising ,,,its nokia cambridge hence the student will be mainly based in usa , hence they want the student to come to kenya briefly for a project they are launching then go back to there main offices ,,,yeah nokia is large On Wed, Nov 4, 2009 at 10:59 PM, Steve Obbayi <steve@sobbayi.com> wrote:
From what i understand is part of the work will be done in the US so that would disqualify the so called locals. Coz for Nokia to pick a local, they would have to show the local has extra ordinary abilities. But again, thats not cast in stone as in there are many loop holes that can be exploited, so i guess if they really want to Nokia can actually get locals to do the same thing.
That would lead me to believe also that maybe there is a third party sponsor to this project that has specified that its for US college students.

Be that as it may.....they can still use local people and have the findings and presentations done in the US.
I dont think...an odiero with only two weeks familarisation can do a better job than a local who really understands the situation.
I agree with saidimu's analogy.

My 2 cents tells me Nokia would prefer to get students in US colleges to do this. For one its a process and a half to get past the tough US immigration laws to allow aliens to work in US. A student in a US college would in this case already have a permit that allows them to work 20hrs a week in US among other things.

Chris,
Humour us, but honestly we should seek clarification cause it does not make sense; unless it is best viewed as being discriminatory.

Then why (oh why!) advertise the position in Kenya ?

It may not be all bad... Perhaps this is a way to negate brain drain... Most of us here know students in the US who don't mind coming back to Kenya, not all American students are "excited" about coming to Africa... Sending it to Kenyans means more people who would be keen on working in Kenya get the ad (Kenyan Students in the US)... Will also aid in negating the brain drain, Getting some Ivy League students back here... My opinion :). -- With Regards, Phares Kariuki | T: +254 734 810 802 | E: pkariuki@gmail.com | Twitter: kaboro | Skype: kariukiphares |
