GSM is a worldwide standard so the frequency band is fixed i.e. 900/1800 mhz. The GSM standard is principally based on freq reuse within RANs connected to a core network. This means the freq at one BTS is not the same as the next thus avoidin issues of interference et al. For 3G, i would refer you to UMTS/3GPP2 technical specification for next gen networks. Helpful? God bless y'all! On 8/7/09, Georg <cheez.mode@gmail.com> wrote:

@Kennedy, the reason i ask is because in some cases some operators in different countries use different frequency bands. Some on 850 or 900 or 1800 (or both) or 1900 (and almost 10 more others [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM_frequency_bands] so I dont know what you mean when you say the frequency band is fixed); and then with 3G there's 850, 1900 and 2100 - hence my question! Have my answer though. -Billy 2009/8/7 nyarotho kennedy <kenyarotho@gmail.com>

In Kenya, GSM frequencies used are 900 and 1800 while for 3G, the frequency used is 2100. You can get specific frequency ranges from 3GPP specs. These ranges have to be assigned to different opererators by CCK. so to get a specific frequency used by an operator, you need to know someone working for the operator or CCK. its not really ati the operators occupy all through the 900 or 1800 MHz, they get chunked something like 5MHz on the 900 and about 10 MHz on the 1800 :this band has got larger BW, which is duplexed on the uplink and downlink bands. GSM 900/1800 is predominant in europe and africa: when shall we ever detach ourselves from these guys?!?!, coz devt in both are in tandem. take BT or FT and other european telcos have had, and continue to have much influence/stake in our african market, which is good for us when we get more or lesss the same advanced products from their global operations. but its not good to have kenyan engineers lagging behind doing the HW maintenance and "leaving" the intelligence in the network to....... they say africa is the next big BOOM area in telecoms with penetration levels of about 30 percent, thus presenting good opportunities for growth. but we need to up our game and run the show. just go through some of these major GSM jobs sites and see the ads for expatriate engineers to come build networks all over afica: mind you the contracts are worth 4000+ Euros per month excluding travel and accm. yet kenyan engs want to do alarms monitoring and routine maintenance. forgive the discourse from the agenda: 3G / +WCDMA runs in the 2100 MHz band with operators like saf.... having been chunked maybe around 20 to 25 MHz duplex : seacom has improved their capacity, but who's doing the coverage. the RNOs better up the game or guys will walk.
