Safaricom has started assigning public IP addresses directly as opposed to NAT-ing which used to be the case. Some websites will notice the different range of IPs your are logging in from and require validation. Bernard On Thu, Nov 4, 2010 at 12:33 AM, Mike M. <mmycool@gmail.com> wrote:

Bernard, Two things. 1. NATing is bad for you (and your network), public IPs are the way to GO! 2. Unfortunately, my Safcom modem shows they are still NATing (am connecting on their usual private 10.x.x.x dished to the modem clients) I was almost celebrating after reading your message. To imagine that Safcom had implemented IPv6 (the only way they could provide Public IPs to their 16million customers) was like music to my ears..(they would be blazing the future for us as usual) Unfortunately they are not doing that as yet. walu. --- On Thu, 11/4/10, Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> wrote: From: Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Safaricom modem giving weird IP address To: "Skunkworks Mailing List" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Date: Thursday, November 4, 2010, 11:08 AM Safaricom has started assigning public IP addresses directly as opposed to NAT-ing which used to be the case. Walubengo, Also, providing public IPs to 16 million subs is not practical. Only about 4 million have data enabled handsets and I suspect only 10% actually use their data handsets to access the internet. Bernard On Thu, Nov 4, 2010 at 3:27 PM, Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> wrote:

Whats wrong with NATing, especially when the people you serving guys who are on and off your network. I know NAting messes up some protocols but I don see why its wrong using it.

@Job, NATing was and is still a "hack" to extend the life of IPv4 i.e. as the IPv4 resources started depleting in the late 80s, engineers figured a way to use 1 public IP to serve thousands if not millions of clients through NAT. This provided some relief but with the following compromise. a) introduces some unecessary delays/latencies for packets traversing through routers. U wont feel this latency for non time sensitive applications but you definately will with newer time sensitive applications like skype, video and others yet to be discovered. b) NAT gives a false sense of security for most IT Techies - that my networks is "safe" because someone cant ping a client on the inside; truth is a spammer or a spoofer need not ping your "inside" to wreck havoc on you Network. And so IPv6 is the answer to both the above two problems. Its address space is "unlimited" and its security is inbuilt (authentication and encryption is not an add-on but designed from scratch). So the sooner Techies adopt IPv6 the safer and more efficient our networks will be. walu. --- On Thu, 11/4/10, Job Muriuki <muriukin@gmail.com> wrote: From: Job Muriuki <muriukin@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Safaricom modem giving weird IP address To: "Skunkworks Mailing List" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Date: Thursday, November 4, 2010, 6:44 PM On Thu, Nov 4, 2010 at 1:02 PM, Walubengo J <jwalu@yahoo.com> wrote: Bernard, Two things. 1. Just got another public IP 197.176.x.x on Safaricom 3g modem.... Bernard On Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 9:24 AM, Walubengo J <jwalu@yahoo.com> wrote:
@Job,
NATing was and is still a "hack" to extend the life of IPv4 i.e. as the IPv4 resources started depleting in the late 80s, engineers figured a way to use 1 public IP to serve thousands if not millions of clients through NAT.

Bernard,
Two things. 1. NATing is bad for you (and your network), public IPs are the way to GO! 2. Unfortunately, my Safcom modem shows they are still NATing (am connecting on their usual private 10.x.x.x dished to the modem clients)
I was almost celebrating after reading your message. To imagine that Safcom had implemented IPv6 (the only way they could provide Public IPs to their 16million customers) was like music to my ears..(they would be blazing the future for us as usual) Unfortunately they are not doing that as yet.

Whats wrong with NATing, especially when the people you serving guys who are on and off your network. I know NAting messes up some protocols but I don see why its wrong using it.

Safaricom has started assigning public IP addresses directly as opposed to NAT-ing which used to be the case. Some websites will notice the different range of IPs your are logging in from and require validation.

@Bernard, I also picked a version 6 IP 3days ago from Safcom. Then yesterday it was a public ver 4 IP and then back to internal (NATted) ver 4. Looks like their technical dept is experimenting quite a bit. I just hope that they finally and permanently settle on IP ver 6. walu. --- On Mon, 11/8/10, Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> wrote: From: Bernard Mwagiru <bmwagiru@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Safaricom modem giving weird IP address To: "Skunkworks Mailing List" <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Date: Monday, November 8, 2010, 7:59 AM Just got another public IP 197.176.x.x on Safaricom 3g modem....
