@Susan, I couldn't help but notice that the slideshow pictures are .png's, yet they are *photographs*, so on a haunch, I converted slide-display-left.png to slide-display-left.jpg and reduced the size from 587KB to 147KB, even without changing the quality level :-) Thats a BIG change for an image. @Susan, you need to adopt a methodical approach to solving your puzzle. First, find out why or what is making your site slow, and for that, I highly recommend PageSpeed or YSlow. Firefox's Webdeveloper Toolbar will give you those two, plus the "Net" tab, which tells you the size and time taken to load each and every asset on your site.
From there, start by fixing the items with the biggest possible impact, most likely those images you are using for the slideshow...
