E-Mail Consultancy : A proposal

Many times we openly share info and/or solutions that would normally costs thousands of Kshs in consultancy costs. There are many of us on this list who belong to this category and even go the extra mile for others to help out, virtually. I think a proposal forward would be to have some sort of consultancy services available via email, else we are selling the ICT sector for free without any benefits of years or experience/knowledge. In anycase, if anyone is stuck, they can always google or bing for results. Just sharing a thought, I hope others have also been thinking about such. Do you think this would defeat the idea of the lists or will it make others lives better? Rgds.

Hi Aki, I disagree. In my opinion, this forum is for sharing ideas. There are those that need to be mentored too. On Mon, Sep 14, 2009 at 11:12 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

@ aki, good idea, wrong model. I think the onus should be on moderators of this list to come up with a creative business model around the activities of the list and make money. Ideas and options are many, you just need to open your eyes. Charging for responses would be akin to google charging for search results, i doubt they would have been as successful. Aki, There are two ways to look at this. 1. Mentoring others or simply having one's brain picked because someone has hit their /etc - this one can be handled the normal way. Give the answer, suggest a possible solution, refer the poster to some google/bing reference. 2. When someone wants a solution implemented and you feel it will consume a substantial amount of time, then you can discuss payment terms with them. I've seen that happening here as well, like what Gichingiri sent last week, or what Daudi Were sent this morning. Hi Guys , I normally like to avoid such discussions but i think Selflessness is the way to go.You might not like what i am writing 'please forgive me'.I'm not attacking anyone. Why would you like to know something and keep it to yourself. Why not share ? It will make you understand more by teaching and mentoring. You will have a lower tendency of forgetting something u have gone over for 5 times. You can look around for those at work and those in Campuses and colleges. Those who share their knowledge always have an upper hand and by teaching you will learn. I have been working with consultants for like 2 years now and the guys always know it all.I have done thorough investigation. The guys have a network ....they share what they know and recommend ideas to our companies not because they have done it,but because a friend has.We think they are geniuses but reality there is a network of ever giving experts. That way they all learn. We can always find information on google but its not as good as being mentored.after all we are not equipment we are people. So please don't cling on what you know when someone asks for help. If its advice on how to do something do it freely .If its a software your making sell it.If someone needs consultancy be ready for it. Don't close-in share your knowledge. If you don't use it ,you loose it. How was Open source borne ?

I think this is a v.nice Tuesday Talk discussion topic. There are so many angles... On Mon, Sep 14, 2009 at 5:06 PM, ibtisam jamal <ibty.jamal@gmail.com> wrote:

Many times we openly share info and/or solutions that would normally costs thousands of Kshs in consultancy costs. There are many of us on this list who belong to this category and even go the extra mile for others to help out, virtually. I think a proposal forward would be to have some sort of consultancy services available via email, else we are selling the ICT sector for free without any benefits of years or experience/knowledge. In anycase, if anyone is stuck, they can always google or bing for results.
Just sharing a thought, I hope others have also been thinking about such.
Do you think this would defeat the idea of the lists or will it make others lives better?
Rgds.

Joseph, what do I need to do or write to remind you of Richard Stallman? Any lawyers to help me draft the Skunkworks-Ke Licence (SKL)? That's the only way to keep the ethos of sharing (River Road style). Aki, if you ever write an OS (after playing IBM) I promise to first pirate it, then boycott it after I see the (Linux) light. Saidimu, I actually support free (in both senses of the word) sharing of ideas on this list. Joseph.

Wooa! lol! Saidi. :-))) Remember it is just a proposal, nothing more.... I think we have a great active online tech community and the strong opinions by all each have a valid point. And majority have said what it should be. Rgds. On Tue, Sep 15, 2009 at 3:02 AM, saidimu apale <saidimu@gmail.com> wrote:

You would be very interested to know what he now says about patents, ...if people back then knew what impact patents would and took IP rights on everything then today the IT industry would be dead... <http://a1.video1.blip.tv/0030000075962/Lessig-WillTechnologyChangeOurWorld156.flv?bri=6.0&brs=777>
