Lets talk about adding more skunksworks content...

With 5 days to go to a new month, open discussion on how can do these : Operating Systems : - For the month of August, I volunteer to lead a thread on Windows 7 Desktop ( well as little as I know about it while shuttling between various things ). - For the month of August a volunteer is needed who can lead threads on Apple MAC - For the month of August a volunteer is needed who can lead threads on FreeBSD - For the month of August a volunteer is needed who can lead threads on Linux Mobile Phones, Operating Systems, Programming and Applications - For the month of August a volunteer is needed who can lead threads on Apple iPhone - For the month of August a volunteer is needed who can lead threads on Andriod - For the month of August a volunteer is needed who can lead threads on Symbian - For the month of August a volunteer is needed who can lead threads on Java - For the month of August a volunteer is needed who can lead threads on Windows Mobile 7 I think this would be a good place to start, then in September someone can be the lead on each thread. What do you think, can we do this? Rgds.

I third that option... <though am a bit lost - are we supposed to discuss technical details, how stuff works, or tips and tricks ?>

I think we should also start looking at a wider audience thus it can be various articles and combinations of what you write below. It can be anything, eg I want to do a thread on Windows 7 desktop enhancements but will cover Windows 7 specs, installation, drivers etc. I may not be able to complete the thread by end of August thus anyone else can take over the thread in September and continue each month. It does not mean one had to be a specialist but we will be opening channels on discussions from various contributors who may need to add or correct the postings. I believe could be a first step towards many more subjects to cover. We can still have the regular contributions on various other things. :-) Me raw thots.. Clarification about this thread : - What are we doing by commiting to hold a thread say eg for 30 days? Invite discussions, critic and solutions. When was the last time anyone on this list talked about Ubuntu, FreeBSD etc ? - The threads do not affect other threads nor contributions nor do they stop anyone from adding their own threads. We are still missing top contributors for August. Subjects proposed are listed in this thread. You cannot shy away from this chance to change the content for the better. The ball is in your court. :-) Rgds

I am willing to run with a networks thread for 2 months. Brilliant idea aki. On Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 12:26 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Gentlemen, Ladies. The clock ticks and the content benchmark is in place. We are plenty still short of 30 day commiters and subjects. You decide what happens next, whether we take the community seriously or was it just a mail-surfers society? If skunks was a free support desk community, then so be it. Was skunks a platform to jump elsewhere, then so be it? There is no definition nor one is needed. You decide on content. :-) Rgds.

Something with regards to the semantics of the threads. Simplify the subject line so threads can be arranged according to subject. [threadName] | #[digestNumber] | Subject Line e.g. [Adobe] | #01 | Today's News watchman On 7/26/10 5:26 PM, aki wrote:

They are pretty smart and knowledgeable and we need their inputs on the threads. Comeon ladies, you can pick any subject that you are comfortable with. Rgds.

@Wash : FreedBSD needs you. Would you do a thread on this? @Mich : Would you do a thread on DNS? @Riyaz : Would you do a thread on the Internet Evolution or Changes expected etc? We still need thread contributors for Linuxers! You are missing.... :-)

I will do a thread on debian focused on the new release coming out soon Squeeze. Have a great day! Warm regards, Amarjit Singh Labhuram. On Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 11:28 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Hi Aki, aki wrote:

@Mich : Would you do a thread on DNS?
There's alot of interesting stuff going on in the DNS world. Root Zone was signed on 15th of July (F and J sitting at KIXP are serving signed zone as we speak). What does that mean to folks when we talk of DNSSEC?. How many folks still block TCP 53 on firewalls?. It would be nice to know. How many folks are running old versions of DNS software thats not EDNS0 aware? Running tests available on this url http://www.icann.org/en/committees/security/sac016.htm Should be a quick start. Of course this has implications on IPv6. What are folks doing about this?. Are the CPE's you have IPv6 ready - but i digress.
@Riyaz : Would you do a thread on the Internet Evolution or Changes expected etc?
Maybe Riyaz should talk on IPv6 from am operators point of view. @Aki - i would be happy to do a thread on peering/interconnection and IXPs as well. My pet subjects as you can imagine. Its still not clear to lots of folks whats the diff between peering and transit. Maybe the day we do local hosting vs external hosting will make more $$$ sense :). have a great day. Regards, Michuki.

@Mich, thanks much. Glad to see you back. I'll update the August Thread list this evening. Cheers :-) On Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 1:33 PM, Michuki Mwangi <michuki@swiftkenya.com> wrote:

Wow! Now this is an interesting perspective. I'd like to take up mobile java for august. I also second what Amarjit says. We need a forum or website or something just to prevent generating too many emails and to make this info searchable (on google, yahoo, e.t.c). This will make it a more useful resource both to us and to any potential consumer. On Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 2:18 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

Hey Wash, basically the idea is to take a topic and generally talk about it on the thread. Then hold the thread for 30 days, and after someone else can take over the thread, if they feel so. Eg for Windows 7 ( am not a win 7 specialist ), I'll do intro and things to do with Win 7. I'd add the enchancements to it. At the end of august, if anyone else is interested in going deep into Windows 7, they are most welcome to do so. If there is no one to take over the thread, I may continue to go deeper into it until I'm satisfied that we have covered the subject. For 30 days that we hold the thread, we are commiters to the thread. We don't let the thread de-generate and allow focus for others to continue. Thats the hope. Rgds. Thanks Solomon for the comment. The last time I checked, SkunksWorks-KE really is a social place where all technologists meet and discuss about technology or go a step further into interests within their thoughts. Skunksworks has been a place to meet, refresh and catchup on tech and events. This I believe has been the success of this social platform, though a maling list. The content is not going to affect any commiters as its based not on pressure or deadlines, but more of a social and relaxed pace. The more content threads we have the better as some can go into sept, oct etc. Me thots. :-) -- "Skunkworks-KE is a social platform for technologists. "

Gentlemen, I think our purpose as a tech a community within SkunkWorks KE is also better served much on the web. The web allows a bigger audience and hopefully we can get more members who are not on mailing lists. Mailing lists also meant that others have filters set for possible contributors who we think are spammy and have been possibly placing our postings to very few people. Do you think we should wait for the web part http://my.co.ke/phpbb/ to be operational to Skunksworks KE standards so that we can start the topic threads? Looking for some guidance. Rgds. I would like to code a web-application from scratch to launch, with the active participation of skunks-ke members (in various capacities, not just programming). Besides demonstrating some key software-engineering and development concepts, I hope to demonstrate the relative ease with which existing, free, high-quality web-services can be leveraged to great advantage, all without paying a cent in hosting fees or sys-admin. Project Goal: ========= - A system for receiving, sending and tracking petrol/gas prices within Nairobi petrol stations. You can then schedule to fill-up at specific stations, knowing they are the cheapest within a particular range. - The primary use-case will be via SMS, but a web-interface may be added as well. Non-negotiable goal: not to spend a single cent in hosting fees, or system-administration. All the time should be spent developing the system, not catering to the supporting infrastructure. If a sufficient number of skunks-ke members are interested in the project, either to passively learn or to actively participate, then I can flesh out the details a little bit more. If there isn't enough interest... well, the idea will self-destruct in 24 hours. Up/Down vote with your comments. Saidi On Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 2:24 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

@Saidi...add me to the list of interested parties....very very hungry to learn!!!
So can we have a vote and get a clear answer to aki's question of whether we should get back to using the phpBB site in the interim? I AM VOTING YES!!!!!
And to add on to that anyone wants to suggest development of a better alternative kindly do share.
Have a great day!
Warm regards, Amarjit Singh Labhuram.

@Amarjeet, from another thread, seems like we may not have an option in the interim and thus move the August Topic Threads postings to phpBB site. Sounds good to me. :-) On Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 11:29 AM, Amarjit Labhuram <amarjit.labhuram@gmail.com> wrote:

Most fantastic idea! Seems like most skunks here think in the same wavelength. This idea too has been in my back burner for a while, at one point, I got so inspired I hired someone to travel around town collecting fuel prices; he did so for about 100 petrol stations, before I realized that for the data to be accurate, it needed regular collection of that data plus GPS locations of each petrol station so that using any of the free mapping APIs, one can give directions to motorists as to where a petrol station is....
From there, I thought integrating with the international crude fuel prices, so that using common formulae, one can more or less accurately predict how the change of prices in UAE and US will affect the price right here...
Then I realized, waita minute, the ministry of energy at some point released a formula to guide on the pricing of fuel based on the distance from KPA in msa plus a few other, which led me to http://www.petroleum.co.ke/ To cut short this long story, I have a ton of research material good for background information on stuff related to petroleum, anyone who wants can have them, i'll upload them somewhere. In addition to participating in this venture, if the language that will finally be settled on is PHP and MySQL, then i am doubly in!

It's a few days past August 1st, so I guess it's a good time to start this project? I'll start a new thread with the title "PetrolTracker" that will be the main thread for the project. Anyone should feel free to start other side threads to discuss specific issues in more detail. Since code isn't the only part, or even the main part of this project, I hope many more can get involved in various capacities (including taking leadership of specific sub-projects). More on the main "PetrolTracker" thread. Saidi On Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 4:18 AM, saidimu apale <saidimu@gmail.com> wrote:

For content threads, commiters pls start moving them to http://my.co.ke/phpbb/ . In the long term, it will help easy migration as pointed out by Frankline.

hi aki, i suggest porting this list to the phpbb. forum admin might want to look at mail2forum.com i think which has been in development for ages and is in dire need of developers to complete the v2.0 ->phpbb3 port. On Fri, Aug 6, 2010 at 9:33 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

As pointed out by Saidi " I'm not too keen on jumping from the frying pan into the fire. The mailing-list has its limitations for sure, but at this point it seems like phpBB has even more severe limitations. I vote for staying put, at least until a measurably superior system is in place.
