Hi guyz Anyone remember randy@psg who used to register .co.ke domains on a volunteer basis? Kenyans need to honour this guy! I remember those days domain registration for .ke those days was 100% free, makes me wonder whether there are any more good people still left in this world... My two cents James James K. Randy has served as Tech POC for many African ccTLDs (not Admin POC). He continues to do the same for various other African countries until a time when they are in a position to manage it themselves. Most recently was the redelegations for .TZ and .NG which he served at Tech POC. He's still left with 1 or 2 more i think but like Liberia have a long way to go. At the time, the registrations were few and manageable. Randy met the cost of hosting the servers etc, which is quite generous and rare indeed. All this for the good of the Internet. He continues to provide free slave servers to a number of ccTLDs to date. Randy remains humble and not fond of formal recognitions. As time would have it, more African countries are now conscious of the need to manage their own ccTLDs and have sort re-delegations (both Tech and Admin POC). Some countries were not as fortunate to have Randy Bush as Tech POC, like Rwanda, Congo, and others. Their Admin POCs is another story all together. Objectively, to grow the service to the next level similar to what KENIC has done with registration features and customer service, it cannot remain free and be sustainable. If you wish to compare, Argentina has it free (if this hasn't changed). But the Government foots the bill to keep it up and running. Regards, Michuki. PS: This thread is not intended to generate into a discussion on the cost of .ke's. Neither is it meant to commence debate on redelegations am sure there are better forums for such. Just shedding some info and the opinions expressed here are mine.
