Re: [Skunkworks] SMARTCARDS FOR PSVs

http://www.nation.co.ke/News/-/1056/650438/-/umpsbu/-/index.html Hey *, I read the above article and wondered if anyone on this list has already come up with such a solution (either as a hobbyist or as a commercial product). You could *propose* your product to the government. BR - Ndambs -

I thought I saw this in the news jana.....Some red buses on test route 46 though the uptake was poor. You buy a smart card at 100 then load with fare. When getting in put in where you are going and fare is deducted. if you alight before the said destination, appropriate fare is calculated.... But zilikuwa zinakaa za mahabusu....What happens in routes where people fight to board On Tue, Sep 1, 2009 at 2:11 PM, John Ndambuki <johnmndambuki@gmail.com>wrote:

"*The Minister further proposed that once the Thika super highway is completed, the domestic airport at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) should be mover to Thika town. This, he said would decongest JKIA and open up Thika town since it would take only 10 minutes to drive from Nairobi to Thika town.*" I am just wondering, how will moving JKIA to thika change anything? *I am just wondering, how will moving JKIA to thika change anything? Just because there is an 8 lane super highway from thika to nairobi, does that mean there will be no traffic jam? * Agreed. I still don't see how an 8 lane highway will decongest the road towards town. As long as they don't offer outlets to vehicular traffic into Nairobi from Thika road, there's nowhere the traffic will go. Bypasses need to be done and completed in parallel with the '8 lane super highway'. What does the airport have to do with the roads anyway.. btw any civil/road engineers on the list ? Increasing roads is usually followed by increased cars - If they can reduce cars - reliable dependable Mass transit etc. That is what I think we need. On Tue, Sep 1, 2009 at 2:35 PM, Josiah Mugambi <jmugambi@gmail.com> wrote:

I agree...more lanes equal more cars. And lets be honest, we all love cars. I believe that it’s only through incentives and availability of proper alternatives that will alter behaviors. The sad thing though, is that we have institutions whose mandate also covers transport, i.e. Rift Valley Railways or Kenya Railways (sorry, I get confused). There’s absolutely no developed country that doesn’t have a proper train system. Its one of the vital components of a growing economy, be it knowledge based or goods based. I believe Kenya Railways has an amazing potential to contribute significantly to the GDP and earn a generous profit. They should spearhead mass urban transit systems for example a tram line set up parallel to the existing highways. A good pilot project would be along Uhuru Highway, right from the Nyayo Stadium roundabout all the way to Westlands Bus Park. In fact, some of these horrific highway accidents that we have witnessed would significantly drop if the Railway services were able to seize the moment and upgrade their tracks and carriages. However, one problem would be electricity blackouts. I'd therefore propose the system uses its own power system, sort of like the Shinkansen (Japan). Well, those are my thoughts. 2009/9/1 Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com>:
