That article is not well researched! <snip> The EastAfrican has established that the providers are swamped with excess capacity after signing 25-year contracts for the biggest bandwidth tiers of 155mbps -- which, according to those in the know, is unlikely to be used within the contract period. Indeed, all that the providers are likely to sell is about 30mbps, but someone has to pay for the surplus -- inevitably, this will be the consumer </snip> This is out of ignorance. -----Original Message----- From: Solomon Mburu <solo.mburu@gmail.com> Reply-to: Skunkworks Forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> To: Skunkworks Forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Are there any issues affecting Fiber optic cables? Even in pre-fiber days the small providers had international capacities greater than 50mbps. Even as we stand currently, this small providers are still buying capacities from the local carrier networks eg KDN and Safcom who have become provider of providers. With this setup, those with the STM1 are only a few who are already filling up the STM1s anyway with traffic from the smaller ISPs. Trust me, if providers had the excess capacities being talked about in this article, every customer currently would be having a ball. No provider would be willing to have idle 125mbps 'sitting' idle. There could be other dynamics affecting pricing but idle capacity is not one of them. -----Original Message----- From: Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> Reply-to: Skunkworks Forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> To: Skunkworks Forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Are there any issues affecting Fiber optic cables? At this point am thinking why cant providers in Kenya get more innovative and start thinking out of the box. just out of the top of my head am thinking... as a provider why wouldnt I provide incentives for developers to team up or individually do something like develop a gaming ecosystem for example within their networks . this would be reason for international users to subscribe therefore driving up the numbers and that in turn can attract advertising and drive up the $$$ Opportunities are unlimited and just waiting for the pickings and what is not realized is that developers are the key and those are the people providers should be coaxing to make this stuff a reality rather than sticking to their traditional business models and charging an arm and a leg to provide connectivity. The only accuracy here is the issue of cartels. The rest, a further research is needed. Hope Mike Otieno is picking something here for his research. On 06/10/2009, Steve Obbayi <steve@sobbayi.com> wrote:

Surely, people can go an extra mile to damage their rivals reputation. Fibre-vandalism should earn a 20 Year penality, without an option of a fine. It beats logic to destroy cables from rivals and still want to remain afloat. I opine our telcos lack innovation if they can go to this level. On 06/10/2009, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

By the way at a small fee I can give you a user name and password and you can search using the keywords such as fibre-obtic,under-sea cable etc and you will be able to get all articles from all dailies (Nation,Standard,Citizen,East African,Business Daily,People and The Star) as from wayback as you want. This way you can get all the information you want On Tue, Oct 6, 2009 at 3:09 PM, Solomon Mburu <solo.mburu@gmail.com> wrote:
