@Andrew, I guess if someone steals the camera, the authorities will have an idea how the thief looks like and what conditions existed for it to be stolen. Including whether they used a ladder or a lorry(Whose number plate they will have). 90% of Nairobi and Nakuru roads have grown dark courtesy of vandals. Maybe this will provide a reprieve. I may be biased to the 5 roundabouts I cross every morning and evening, but it seems the police actually do let the lights work independently - most of the time. There is almost always a cop or 2 at the intersection, but not directing traffic. They only step in during early mornings and evenings - when traffic increases.

If you know you may commit a traffic offence, the *best *you can do is paste a fake number plate using a hard paper then you are good to go.... when the camera zooms on the plates. Only that if you are caught, you will have to answer to double offences.

In most countries where this has worked, the traffic camera also take a picture of the driver. So it is possible to dispute that you were not driving at that time as the face is obviously clearly visible on he picture. But I can see how this is easy to defeat, like wearing a mask or just may be having one of those windshields where you can't see inside but the drive can see outside, and I am not sure if that is legal. And I also imagine the number plate must also match the make, model and color of the car. The system is not fool proof but good enough to deter casual law breaking. If you are at a point you have to get fake number plates to break the law, or just fix someone else, it think it is no longer a trivial issue and needs to be addressed separately. I may be biased to the 5 roundabouts I cross every morning and evening, but it seems the police actually do let the lights work independently - most of the time. There is almost always a cop or 2 at the intersection, but not directing traffic. They only step in during early mornings and evenings - when traffic increases.

The camera installations are pretty vulnerable right, left and rear. You can approach from the rear (lorry, at 2AM), cut cables, unclip expensive electronic gadgets, drive away. Profit! I doubt the guys on the other end (monitor) will scramble a response team to check is the camera just lost power, got hit by a drunk, or really took a walk ;) Even if they can, I doubt they will at 2AM. Including whether they used a ladder or a lorry(Whose number plate they will have). 90% of Nairobi and Nakuru roads have grown dark courtesy of vandals. Maybe this will provide a reprieve.

I may be biased to the 5 roundabouts I cross every morning and evening, but it seems the police actually do let the lights work independently - most of the time. There is almost always a cop or 2 at the intersection, but not directing traffic. They only step in during early mornings and evenings - when traffic increases.

If you know you may commit a traffic offence, the *best *you can do is paste a fake number plate using a hard paper then you are good to go.... when the camera zooms on the plates. Only that if you are caught, you will have to answer to double offences.
