Watchie! (hehehe), When you purchase a RHEL, you do not purchase the media (although you can choose to just like any other distro). What you purchase is a subscription for updates & errata and also support online and offline. I have close to 70 subscriptions paid up yearly to Redhat and the beauty of all that is that you do not have to worry about applying updates & errata - and if there are issues with any package install, Redhat comes in and helps (this in my close to 5 years has happened only once, but still I found it worth it)
From the hacker point of view, its baseless to pay it, but if you have many systems you have to deal with, its perfect, and dont have to worry about any third party repos messing up your system - IMHO
