Hi Guys, I do use Open Source stuff but frankly, their licences confuse me. Can someone break it down for me please (yeah, I know there is Google, wikipedia...) specifically, GPL, Mozilla Licence, Java licensing terms, <list_any_other> and their effect on a programmer/developer. What licence type allows me to deploy applications "just like that"? 1. Is RedHat opensource? Can I download it and just install on a site (assuming am not interested in their support/subscription package) 2. And what in hell is a "Commercial Opensource" product? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. 3. Does a change in licence type apply to already deployed products? For instance, if Oracle changes the MySQL licence, will it affect the already running instances? Some light on these will be appreciated

Mr. Lawi, If you, or any other organsation, agrees to pay me shillings 20,000/= for my time. I am ready to visit you to give a detailed presentation on the various Open Source licencing frameworks. regards, Alex On Thu, Apr 23, 2009 at 2:02 PM, Mr. Lawi <mail2lawi@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks David. Let me check it out @Gakuru Unfortunately, this is not possible for me. I blame it on the financial crisis:) Though am thinking of becoming ur competitor, looks lucrative 2009/4/23 David Njuki <njukey@gmail.com>

No... it won't affect already running instances ... You cannot change licenses retro-actively, as a license is effectively a software contract. If oracle were to change the license of MySQL to a commercial one say on the 24th of April 2009 - that license will apply to the MySQL source code only from that point of time. The software was open-source before that date -- which leaves the door open for other open source developers to fork MySQL in an open-source flavour. Ashok
