80,000! I think that's way too much - even for a smartphone, in the UK it is retailing for £450 - £500 Might just wait for better deals to arrive in KE Regards, Brian On Tue, Dec 20, 2011 at 12:52 PM, Kevin Omondi <kevin.ouma@gmail.com> wrote:

They won't come down unless you import yourself. The ipad has been selling for 95000 and the other day I saw the flopped blackberry playbook retailing for 85000 at fone express. (price ranges between 99 and 199 USD in the US) One is better of importing instead of being exploited.. Which is the current state case. Now that we are talking of importing , I am interested in duties that one would pay for phones if imported via mail. This device (http://www.expansys.co.za/acer-liquid-metal-205669/) costs Kshs 18,000 to purchase and ship, how much would I pay for duty? The above device is available locally for upwards of Kshs 50,000 (what is with local shops and making profits in the hundreds and thousands of percentages?)

as long as it's a computer or mobile phone there is import duty (zero-rated) Mblayo On Tue, Dec 20, 2011 at 3:44 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

But I have gathered that there are other duties amounting to about 17 per cent of what they think the device costs

If am not wrong, there used to be an offer of sorts from DHL where guys could import many items and share the cost of the (single) cargo. If it still exists, it can help in this scenario On Tue, Dec 20, 2011 at 6:00 PM, Dennis Kioko <dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:

Partnership between Borderlinx & DHL has ended due to fraud - http://www.techmtaa.com/2011/12/08/borderlinx-now-stops-delivery-to-kenya-du... There was already a discussion about custom duties and VAT for new phone and computer. I think (but I am not sure) the conclusion of discussion was that there is no custom fees but there is a small VAT fee of 5.5%...
