Just as gps and maps have become a norm, I've successfully tested over the last 6 months and can list these for you. While Nokia has builtin voip settings, I preferred to use a standard SIP client that will work on most symbian devices and any providers. Am still to test on Winmo 6.1 pro. Software : Uniphone by Optimobile : http://www.optimobile.se/ Cost : 25 Euros ( online ) Usage networks : Data Wifi Codecs supported : G.711 (u-law and a-law), GIPS iLBC (30 ms) and Enhanced G.711 Tests conducted : On Wifi only. test provider was nice enough to mail my logs to me. With these it was possible to see the errors and corrections needed on their asterisk system. Results : Excellent voice quality, requires a minimum of duplex 64kbps for G711. Sat delay and some jitter was as exptected. sharing my thots. ( corrections are welcome ). :-) Rgds. -----Inline Attachment Follows----- _______________________________________________ Skunkworks mailing list Skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks Other services @ http://my.co.ke Other lists ------------- Skunkworks announce: http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/skunkworks-announce Science - http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/science kazi - http://lists.my.co.ke/cgi-bin/mailman/admin/kazi/general

Watson dude. :-) the SIP client software supports both egde and 3g options. I did not try these cause the tests would be inconclusive. On costs, I tested to UK/USA @ 2.96 kshs/min but that depends on provider. I did not test with any local voip provider because they would be hampered with bandwidth and latency issues. once sub fiber goes live, I can share the test info. on wifi, the sip software makes a nice travel companion. on most airports I've gone thru, they have open wifi so while surfing checking mails, calling can be economical too. I think kdn have voip on butterfly so that maybe a next test. btw, this is all testing so just sharing info. testing with telcos may not be that good as they have bursty data services. it all depends now on seacom/teams. :-)

no wonder Zain have discovered that in a few days serious people will be going the sip...let me perfect my asterisks skill then.. On Tue, Jun 9, 2009 at 2:39 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

my naive view and pls correct as necessary. If I may add : Telcos have nothing to fear about voip. I'll avoid any individual rant on them as they know it themselves. Try and build any solution around these data networks and you will burn your hands. I don't know how you all developers on mobile platforms are doing it. There has been talk about how mobiles will change lives, the idea makes alot of sense when tech architects/developers are designing and implementing one way systems i.e sms based services. On this format, mobile networks get high flying colours. When you take things just a notch higher and involve tcp/udp based systems, forget it. Their networks are unreliable, inconsistent and your system/development will have a short life. There are still many hurdles they have to cross and in the process limiting many who can develop systems that could do things. They just don't know how much they impede progress in development and solutions. Nothing much we can do about it as when we complain, there are many meanings taken of this rather than that of demands for improvement of such services. I just don't bother any more except when the latencies will be around 100-400ms to international destinations. :-)
