I think we are avoiding the big question here - Who the heck funded such a research ???? We have found that using IE to run java code in the background works quite well; other browsers need tweaking on the code (speaking from a Vista point of view)
Hmmm, in my experience, Applets work differently on IE as compared to other browsers....but it works better in IE....the issue is not the browser performance, its the lightest browser there. I mean, users who can't figure out how to download an install a better browser must be , well, never mind. Hey, at least developers figured out that no longer including IE 6 CSS hacks would make users realize that they can as well get other browsers.
Dissing IE users as slightly dafter than the rest of us 'enlightened' folk may make some guys feel good about themselves but for most of these users a browser is as irrelevant as the OS its running on. Its a means to an end and they have better things to do than worry about speed and sexy names. Most of them want to check their mail, download a document or watch a funny youtube video. And the fact that it also has enuf security holes like swiss cheese.
