I guess almost everyone is a victim here...but I've had it with these buggers! Seems your Chinese network only competes with the European ones on price... Where is CCK on this? Weren't they taking some network metrics or something some time back? Ama it was just a PR show? Crack the whip, ala... I guess safcom knows it, and I will repeat for the benefit of all - whoever else comes up with a mobile money transfer system as good as m-pesa will surely kill you.

Someone from safcom got in touch soon after I ranted here...and so far the texts I send get delivered without delay. But what of the other millions out there? Everybody I talk to says they have the same problem. A long-term solution needs to be sought - since as Andrew has hinted - it means they probably are seeking support from the chinese which may/may not be forthcoming (borrowing from wikileaks :) )...but the worst bit here is the aspect of going for cost-cutting measures that have an impact on the QoS they deliver to clients. Seems the arc of cheapness always tends to the expensive. Totally uncool.

I have had the same problem for about a week now. it's intermittent. but on wknds its's worse.crap really from the 'bitter option' On Wed, Mar 9, 2011 at 6:00 PM, Haggai Nyang <haggai.nyang@gmail.com> wrote:

Look at it from this perspective: For each client who sends (and resends) an undelivered text and is billed for it, what scale of theft are we looking at?

When you pay for a service, its never pure hot air! Threatening to leave is another thing because even if people leave the network will still run albeit on a small number of customers - but compromising when you pay for a service is not acceptable! ./Ok3ch On Fri, Mar 11, 2011 at 8:50 AM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:

@Mark...ati nauseous...well, if you feed me a shitty service my natural inclination is to heave at your feet. I don't know about you as I got a number of friends and close relatives who work for the very company - but I will not spare a second to complain when I fail to see value for my money. In the same breath, possibly you have a closer association to Safaricom, hence your personally-themed tangent? Your opinion - however entitled you are to it - would have more clout if I was a lone voice shouting from the rooftops about their poor service. What has been said by others on this thread and the rest of the list confirms there are serious problems affecting their bottom line they need to address; as for whether I am dedicating most of the thousands I spend every month on airtime to Airtel - yeah you don't need a rocket scientist to figure that out. M-PESA is seriously the only service that has me tethered to them, that and the fact that I have had that number for a very long time hence more of my contacts are aware of it. The latter would be solved by number portability - which I believe you know is undergoing tests at the moment. I reiterate - give me a suitable mobile money transfer alternative and I will lose that green SIM if they maintain these standards of service.

what will happen now that they are offering unlimited SMS's per day for 10 bob? On Fri, Mar 11, 2011 at 11:50 AM, Haggai Nyang <haggai.nyang@gmail.com>wrote:

@kevin...that one iko under consideration :)

@haggai The only association I have with the company is the shares (countable on one hand) that I own and the line in my pocket. For a company of its magnitude in an economy of our size, I believe they are doing a good job and any time I have issues I get personalized service and several callbacks. As far as am concerned they deliver (most of) what they advertise. Your reasons for staying a Safaricom customer are to me easy to resolve. All the other networks have money transfer services and as for the most known no. effect, all you need is to inform everyone in your address book that you have switched no.s which should cost just a thousand or 2 bob of airtime with the current sms rates, and everyone starts using the new line. You don't HAVE to use Safaricom. There are viable alternatives as you said. What do you mean by viable money transfer solution? one with more agents? funkier name? greener colours? orange money, yu cash and zap currently have more features than m-pesa though fewer outlets and distribution network.

Good people, What is happening with Safaricom? In my decidedly low-tech world, an upgrade is supposed to be a good thing but since they did that, things seem to have fallen apart! Also, there is a restructuring going on http://youtu.be/7zT6ckkce64 and am hearing that all the chief officers have been told to reapply for their jobs afresh. @Larry Maybe we should really investigate to confirm if the problems prevailing at Safaricom are as a result of their shift to Chinese-manufactured equipment or not - we can only make intelligent guesses at this point as these issues escalated mostly after they made that switch in equipment manufacturers. What also lends credence to that line of thinking is the fact that there are network problems that seem particular only to Safaricom which I have not experienced in rival networks, such as: - long SMS delivery periods (the subject of this thread) - calling a safcom number and hearing that irritating off-air channel noise when the recipient picks up - calling a safcom number and having someone else pick up - who you don't know and who doesn't know the person you intended to call - calling a safcom number and somehow getting routed to a phone that seems to be idle - you don't get to hear the ringing tone but instead it's like you've tapped into a phone's mic lying somewhere and you can hear people conversing - and it's not necessarily the phone of the person you intended to call The first two are the most prevalent lately - the incidences of the latter two seem to have fallen off. Safaricom does seem to have peculiar calling habits too!
