KICT Board Grants and sharing ideas.

For those who have read the KICTB brief and are going for it, excellent move. For those who are skilled and may not have some ideas to work with, I share these ideas as I cannot focus on them due to personal constraints . Though I've not seen the RFP application forms, if anyone has already done so, they could help others get the process going incase there are clarifications needed. ( Deadline for submitting complete application forms is July 19, 2010. ) Ladies, Gents. This thread is to share those ideas that you may not have time to start or complete but someone else on the list can take up and benefit from. Your ideas may also be a wish list that you want to see happen and could lead to better ideas. However time is short for those interested, we have to ensure that the KICTB grant opportunity is not lost. IDEAS SUMMARY LIST ( incase they are useful to you ) : 1) Archive and Digitization of the Kenya National Museums : Create an online archive and searchable system. Each item needs to be scanned into image format with a water mark. The archives will provide a low image resolution for thumbnails preview and caption information about each asset. The assets will restrict high resolution images to paid categories. The archive database will be fully searchable by tags in caption like description, date, category etc. The system developed should be user friendly so that anyone who is the archive administrator can upload, edit and save content. 2) Historical Kenya : The National Archives and Kenya's journey over time. We have one of the greatest discoveries right in our backyard. Then after there is not much public information easily available nor informative. Do we have cave paintings? Do we have BC/AD timelines and what transpired? What impact did Shaka Zulu have on Kenya? Why is it that some local traditional dancers dress are simlar to those of the Zulu traditional dancers? This would be an interesting timeline project. An online system similar to 1) above. 3) A portal Mapping of all National Parks with GPS : Everyone knows how difficult it is to navigate in such areas. An old idea but with edge/grps. A site portal with single webcam feed of each possible location and integration over mobile devices. Example : Each year thousands of wildbeasts cross the mara, yet no one can predict the excat time. This year the rivers are full, crocodiles in plenty but also plenty of grass. So will they cross in larger or smaller numbers? Having a webcam feed that DOES NOT capture the event live but only streams small frames. Afterall you want people to visit and see the event in realtime, not on a desktop. 4) Nepad portal : This was suggested a while back but did anyone ever get it going? Rgds, Me thots.

Aki, If you were a woman I would propose to you... but on second thought, I would not...you are too generous and we all know that is not favorable in all situations. Nice ideas, especially the GPS mapping. Question, as a developer pool and IT pros, I think we should form something like a developer group, probably non-profit, make it dedicated to developing such ideas with or without grants. The thing is there is so much to do and when projects get to a certain point, they get easy to run. Am thinking its time we did this. David. @David, lol! You are welcome. :-) On a serious note we should do what you propose, though I do not count myself as a dev until have a finished a software product that has some sales success. All in due course...... In the meantime, let's also push others to achieve their goals and dreams. Ideas are plenty to go about, nearly everthing around us is begging to be improved, better implemented or even taken to new levels. And now there is a chance to change things. Rgds. The thing is there is so much to do and when projects get to a certain point, they get easy to run.
Am thinking its time we did this.

This is also a good time to form teams that can work on certain proposals. I am sure we will all stand a better chance if we coalesce into consortia which can bring together varied skills and talents. it is going to be harder to go it alone as am sure many on this list are lone rangers but with very good skills and ideas. Some have great ideas but no operational infrastructure. I am open to team up with any like minded individuals. Evans On Thu, Jun 3, 2010 at 11:21 AM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

What happens in this country is that the people who work together and fast get the contracts and those who can actually do the job are left ranting because we hate to work together and follow protocol. I can bet my life that after grants are successfully handed to whoever wins, this forum will host a list of complaints on what didnt go right... lets make it right early. How do we take the first step? David. On Thu, Jun 3, 2010 at 12:06 PM, Evans Ikua <ikua.evans@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi yall, Just curious, This gov is sponsoring the idea right!? Who is enforcing the intellectual right policy on the ideas that will be given?? How full proof is this?? If you give your idea, is it protected?? If it is then I will try, If not... Whats the sense of giving an idea and then being told it doesnt qualify then you see it being implemented by some multinational company thats sponsoring the gov in the first place and you are helpless. If our intellectual rights are being protected and If we can trace the company thats sponsoring our gov and its agreeable(not shifty) then we can go ahead but, this is my opinion, What do yall think?? Ruth, I think the best thing for you (and everyone else) is to get the documentation provided by KICT and see if they address such issues as raised by you. If they don't, you may as well go for the grant, but ensure that your proposal has enough pages of legal protection lingo preceding it, signed by a lawyer who understands Intellectual Property Rights. like it:-) I think there may be one such lawyer in KE, named Murungi.. Given your concerns, I think many may hesitate to go for the grant. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Really splendid ideas, totally worth pursuing. I can't remember the book, but I once read that there are 4 different kinds of people. The hare (tactical: runs quickly from idea to idea, activity to activity), the owl (strategic: seas the whole picture ), the tortoise (slow, but reliably sticks with a project till it's finished) and the squirrel (avid worker, wholly focused on the present tasks at the expense of the whole picture). And that the genius of a team is in leveraging the strengths, and eliminating the concomitant weaknesses of those traits. I would be skeptical of splitting 5 billion people into 4 personality types if Konosuke Matsushita (the panasonic creator) had not gone on and on about the "hare" and the "tortoise" in one of his autobiographies. So I'm one with those calling for teams. And I urge those who fear that their ideas will be stolen, to either form teams and implement, or share them for others to do that. While we are not developers, we are an NGO that support innovations for development. All too often good ideas are never implemented due to a lack of funds. We are hoping this grant spurs innovations that will applicable to our work and are currently consulting with innovators about their applications. Some of these ideas that are being suggested are actually tied to projects we are currently working on such as the rural mapping. I do encourage that we form teams around different ideas that are applicable. I also highly recommend that they are interdisciplinary in nature. I would love to see innovations that could be readily implemented for development purposes. Best wishes for everyone who participates, Crystal www.voicesofafrica.org On Thu, Jun 3, 2010 at 5:17 PM, Bernard Owuor <b_owuor@yahoo.com> wrote:
