12 reasons why not to but the Apple iPad?

There are many articles on Top 5 to Top 10 reasons!! lol. :-) Nothing personal, nor anything against Apple and I did not write this review! The article is dated Feb 5th 2010 and gives a consumer view? http://www.softsailor.com/news/16878-ipad-a-disappointment-12-reasons-not-to... iPad A Disappointment: 12 Reasons Not To Buy it 1. Design The iPad is indeed just “an iPhone on steroids.” Have you seen all of those Apple tablet renderings before the launch? Some of them were great and a giant iPhone or a giant iPod (if you prefer it this way) is just ugly. There are and there will be more beautiful tablets on the market. 2. Multitasking This is a tablet PC. It’s a computer and you cannot run simultaneous apps? What if I want to browse the web, tweet, check email, and listen to music in the same time? I won’t be able to do that. 3. Front-facing camera I’d like a tablet PC with a webcam for video-conferencing calls, but Apple has said “No!” once again to a front-facing camera. Also there isn’t a camera on the back, even though it would be awkward to take pictures holding up a 9-inch device 4. Adobe Flash support HTML5 is becoming more and more popular, and some browsers support it, but Adobe Flash Player remains the web standard if you want computer-like browsing experience. The Nokia N900 has it and the Mozilla-based Maemo browser is probably the best mobile browser in the world. Users WILL to read newspapers on the iPad and I’m sure they’ll also want to watch some YouTube videos, but… you know the story. There’s an app for that too 5. Pricing The Apple iPad is expensive and you cannot use regular connectors from your other devices. You will have to use some expensive Apple stuff. A physical keyboard is not included in the package, you’ll have to buy it yourself. Want a camera? Pay for it! Can you buy a conventional camera? No, you have to buy Apple’s camera connection kit. The iPad case is also not included in the package so this means that you will have to dig deep into your pockets. 6. Battery Although the iPad is expected to run 24 hours on a single charge, things will change if play games and use WiFi or 3G connections during the day. Do you really think that this device will run a whole day? It won’t and there is no removable battery. Nowadays many consumers are buying an extra battery in order to replace the one in the device when it runs out. Non-removable battery means that you can run out of battery when you need it the most. 7. Processor Steve Jobs said that Apple cannot make a less than $500 product that it’s not garbage. Well, Apple made a $500 product that is garbage. The iPad is powered by a 1GHz Apple A4 custom-built processor, and seriously guys, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon has the same core speed and it’s a chip for phones. You’re using a computer! 8. Operating system We were all expecting something innovative from Apple and a new OS would have been great. iPhone OS 3.2 is not a big improvement over iPhone OS 3.1.3 currently available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The iPad really is just a big iPhone and that won’t help you at all. 9. Micro SIM The iPad requires a micro SIM card in order to use the 3G network. You can’t use your conventional SIM 3G card and you’ll have to buy another one only from AT&T 10. Carrier Rumors said that Verizon is preparing its store managers for Wednesday (January 27th.) because it’s going to be a big day. We thought that the iPad will be subsidized by Verizon, but instead we’re stuck with AT&T’s crappy 3G network again. 11. TV-out You might purchase videos from the iTunes store and download them to your iPad. You could watch them on the large 9-inch screen, however, I’d like to watch it on a HDTV. Oh, there’s not HDMI port, not even a TV-out connector. 12. Name People began making fun of the iPad even before its release and that’s thanks to Apple. It happens each time Cupertino releases a new product, but it’s funnier and funnier. Even though iTablet wouldn’t have been better, it’s too late now as a UK company has launched a tablet PC with this name.

Nice article aki. But I think you meant buy the ipad not "but" it as it reads on the topic subject :). I'll keep on saving for an ipad though. Not fully convinced it isn't worth it :) -- Regards Martin

Aki, I am beginning to feel you have something against Apple (AAPL). Same reasons you have given above apply to almost all tablets. Apple's philosophy has been about aesthetics and lifestyle. They have had to comprise between these and features. It is like that with most Apple products, but people still love them nevertheless. Things like Multitasking will be addressed by the upcoming OS 4. And future iPads will most like have the features you mention like the front facing camera. The iPhone 4G has it. While some points about prices are valid, it is a Niche product. The rest of the world are free to purchase their tables from Asus or whatever knock-off is coming from China.

@Philip, is it true that Apple imposes a lifetime purchasing limit to just 2 units? So what happens when a family want to be on iPad. Whoever heard of such sales strategies in modern times like now. I know there are things like a waiting period for item but never of such limits. Pls clarify if you know more. :-) On Wed, Jun 2, 2010 at 12:03 PM, Philip Musyoki <pmusyoki@gmail.com> wrote:

@Aki, chief -- did Steve Jobs shoot your puppy or something? Don't lose sleep over Apple and its activities. People who buy iPads, iPhones etc do so because it makes perfect sense for their immediate needs. The authors of all these lists of why to not buy iPads are eating their words as apple shipped 2 million of those bad boys in two months. These 2 million people are not ignorant or foolish. they know what they want and iPads fit this. If it doesn't fit your needs ... let those to whom it does be! Kuna Asus, Achros, etc for the rest. As Mr King said, "Can't we all just get along?" On Wed, Jun 2, 2010 at 12:38 PM, aki <aki275@googlemail.com> wrote:

@Rad, am now switching off sidewinders and giving it a complete rest. One issue goes back to my FreeBSD days and networking. I still have a cutting of some bright person who did a simple analysis many years ago when they lied about performance of G5 machines ( 2003 ). I list something similar below and you can only understand it if you ever did BSD. I have nothing against Apple, enjoy using the prompt interface occasionally which is like working from freebsd and may even buy one in future because of it being a BSD powered device. :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stripping down Apple’s products and history may tell us a bit about the magic; innovation and revolution. Most of Apple’s software is based on Free Software developed at universities by taxpayers money. The core Apple software – Mac OS– comes from BSD. It is developed and distributed by the Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) of the University of California, Berkeley. Darvin is the base of Mac OS X which is built on top of XNU kernel. XNU Kernel is combination of Mach, BSD and other free software. Mach, the micro kernel, was not developed by Apple; it was another university project started at Carnegie Mellon University. The security which Apple boasts of: that Apple is free of viruses; has not been created by Apple. It is the feature of these democratic Unix-like systems which Apple picked up for free and converted into expensive systems. Apple used BSD because the licensing allows anyone to take the code without giving anything in return. Apple rarely pays back. Despite being one of the most free licenses, the problem with the BSD license is that it doesn’t force the user to contribute back to the original coder. Apple not only closes the code of most of its products, but also uses very restrictive terms for users and developers. The same OS which was created by using community developed project does not allow you to install it on non-Apple hardware. According to Apple’s EULA (end users license agreement) it is illegal. Nice business model. Borrow as much as you can from university projects; student’s toil and taxpayer’s money. But don’t give anything back. Use it to create an airtight compartment where every right to your customers and developers is refused. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Wed, Jun 2, 2010 at 12:52 PM, Rad! <conradakunga@gmail.com> wrote:

Well, given that Apple Inc is a tax paying legal entity, they do have a right to use research results... Or is use of the same limited to non-corporate tax payers? Nice business model. Apple should not boast of many achievements. No wonder the iPad is limited to non-multitasking yet the entire technology world is talking about hardware/software advances beyond one's imagination. In 2010 we have a dumber than dumb product being sold which will remain a memorable one. It can be understood that mobile phones limit multi-tasking due to battery life but a tablet? Such funny people they are... :-)))))

lol! :-) Allergic to apple's.... Phares, would you know why Apple decided to market a dual boot machine? They strongly went after the other OS was full of virus exploits etc, then they went ahead and shot themselves in the foot. Similar to the way when a few years ago they went out a claimed to have the world's fastest machine. After independent tests, it was proved otherwise. Corrections welcome. And catchup later. :-)

SJ at the Apple Special Event (April 2010): "It's like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it." That multi-tasking and battery life argument is not justified but actually strengthens the argument that the iPad is nothing more than an over-sized iPhone. In phones it is acceptable to have limitations. In anything else, sorry that falls short of any expectations.

Aki, Do not try to search for explanations on things like Apple's cult following. There is no true explanation. It is a matter of faith and believes. It is like religion.

@Philip, dude go easy man :-) It probably explains the acceptable but backward models that thy SJ is releasing on its flock. Saying 2 million are sold is great yet the device technology is as old as 5 years ago. Did I not write on this list about Apple dragging us back into the 80s?. What market segment, probably teenagers and middle-adged and other who still refuse to see the "light" and are looking at a dress code? But heck, if someone had to me earlier that it was a religious matter, I surely would have stayed away from criticizing it. My apology in advance. I've always been neutral on OS'es because each one has its own issues but gets the job done. Agree with @Rad and @Rahim, time to move on. :-) @Rahim, to be fair to all iPad/Apple potentials, you should start a thread on " 12 REASONS TO BUY AN IPAD ". Cheers. This debate i suspect is quite pointless. There will always be people who think iPhones/iPads are brilliant because give them what they want (like me) and are perfectly happy. There will be others that think Apple products suck because they don't give them what they want (like Aki) and are perfectly happy. Both points of view are valid, because everyone's needs are different. It is presumptions to insist you are right purely because of your own pro/anti views. No amount of emails and arguments will induce either side to cross to the other. Any points raised by either side can be easily countered. Why don't we agree to disagree and move on. The cult loyalty is explained as this : The first iPhone was released in June 2007 and almost 3 years later is when multi-tasking is being introduced? The cult loyalty is explained as this : The first iPhone was released in June 2007 and almost 3 years later is when multi-tasking is being introduced? So the iPad is again limited in its first release, will the faithful wait another 3 years to be liberated? :-))))
I think this article (from 2006) explains why Apple have been successful with the iPhone OS in the consumer space: http://www.acm.org/ubiquity/views/v7i07_pfeiffer.html ~gms

Stripping down Apple’s products and history may tell us a bit about the magic; innovation and revolution.
Apple acknowledges that the OS X kernel is based on FreeBSD & Mach: http://images.apple.com/macosx/technology/docs/L416017A_UNIX_TB_FF.pdf Avie Tevanian, who was one of the key developers of Mach, led the OS development efforts at NeXT and later Apple. Btw, the lead developer of the Mach Project, Rick Rashid, heads Microsoft Research Operations (http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/rick/).
Nice business model. Borrow as much as you can from university projects; student’s toil and taxpayer’s money. But don’t give anything back. Use it to create an airtight compartment where every right to your customers and developers is refused.
I understand GCD (http://www.apple.com/macosx/technology/#grandcentral) is making its way into the FreeBSD source tree (http://wiki.freebsd.org/GCD). ~gms
