Those prices (2k/-) are frustratingly high. Do people know why? The ke TLD isn't even signed: http://stats.research.icann.org/dns/tld_report/ Also, opening up the TLD to international registrars would be a good step: http://www.kenic.or.ke/index.php/registrars/how-to-become "Kindly note that the .KE Registry is still closed and thus to become an Accredited Registrar, your organization must have local presence, that is, your organization must have an office within the country (Kenya)." The French company Gandi.net (http://www.gandi.net/) has over 100 ccTLDs, but not .ke. This is one more impediment to Nairobi being an international tech hub. -Adam +254 712 966 801 https://twitter.com/varud https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Thu, Mar 7, 2013 at 10:32 AM, Wycliffe Onduu <w.onduu@gmail.com> wrote:

Actually at KShs 2K (~ $25) it's quite reasonable. a .com is approx $12 a year and in the league of ccTLDs it's at the lower end of the spectrum ( https://opensrs.com/site/services/domains). Just speculating here but I'd imagine it's more expensive than .com due to a smaller economy of scale.

Good link, you're absolutely right. I forgot about how expensive ccTLDs are. Still, since only Kenyan groups use .ke (unlike .tv let's say), Kenic is simply taxing the groups most useful to the local Internet economy driving them to TLDs like .biz and .com. I highly doubt a $9 price differential PA would strongly influence organisations one way or another. There may however be other factors (perception, ease of administration, ease of payment) that may influence them towards gTLDs. For individuals I would buy the argument that it may influence their decision but I'm sure I read about KENIC addressing that by introducing cheap/free vanity domains (the details elude me).
