Is this not criminal in many jurisdictions of the world? (maybe even Kenya, not sure) Does this not constitute recruiting individuals for criminal activities possibly targeted at Skunks, their businesses or their employers? Is it right to let this go on? @Kelvin, If you are scared, please change all your IP addresses now! For the LAN interface, make it 127.0.0.1/32 For the WLAN interface, make it 127.0.0.2/32 And you will never be caught by these guys! Seriously though, I wonder whether you personally believe the recruitment constitutes any criminal activity. I don't. On Thu, Jul 5, 2012 at 12:27 PM, Kelvin <kjayanoris@gmail.com> wrote:

Is it the recruitment you are worried about or the objective? I didn't know it's wrong to hack! That is why we talk about online security. It's wrong to steal, but ethical hacking is quite legit, which is what I believe the recruitment is about. However, if they want to exploit some zero day hole in M-Pesa, why not? Is it their fault that someone did not secure their app? If they can siphon off the money, it only teaches a lesson, but there is this thing called insurance so don't worry if they run down M-Pesa to zero money! Have you ever heard of the saying "Hire a thief to catch a thief"? Well that is the concept behind ethical hacking (which was clearly the genesis to this thread). How do we know dave is not working for the government
Have you ever heard of the saying "Hire a thief to catch a thief"? Apologies, I think I misunderstood something.
From your comments it seems that Dave previously stated he was recruiting for "ethical hacking" purposes.
Is yes, then I see no problem with it. My questions were, basically, looking at it from this angle: what if the objective of this is not ethical, or legal? If Dave clarified this then my point is/was moot. However, if they want to exploit some zero day hole in M-Pesa, why not? Is
it their fault that someone did not secure their app? If they can siphon off the money, it only teaches a lesson, but there is this thing called insurance so don't worry if they run down M-Pesa to zero money!
Wash, this is where you and I part ways in how we think. :) To each his own, though. Kelvin On Thu, Jul 5, 2012 at 3:00 PM, Stephen Munguti <kamitu.sm@gmail.com> wrote:

It depends on what these people are being recruited to do, doesn't it?
It could range from working in the "security industry" to things more sinister.
Just for discussion's sake, if these guys are recruiting to exploit some unknown zero-day hole in MPESA (again, just as a random example of something that affects many people) does the recruitment constitute criminal activity, in your view Washington?

And you will never be caught by these guys!
Seriously though, I wonder whether you personally believe the recruitment constitutes any criminal activity. I don't.

@ Kelvin People hire hackers all the time. If I have a website that involves money transfer; Or I would like user comments protected; Or their passwords - I would definitely hire a hacker to exploit any loop holes overlooked by the developers. I am sure PayPal; eBay, Amazon, Apple Store etc have hackers in their payrolls for periods at a time. There is also the career called 'Reverse Engineers' - also a very lucrative business under category 'hackers' - usually hired by Competitors to take the apart the other people's products [?][?] BR///

Well that is the concept behind ethical hacking (which was clearly the genesis to this thread). Skilled cyber-security professionals as a must *have* to be very profficient with all the tools, techniques and tactics that are used by "cyber-baddies" to compromise information systems.
Nothing wrong with asking for help....

Hackers hired by Apple recently: Steve Jobs led an Iron Fist Rule to ignore the hackers and fight them with every dollar he got. Tim Cook on the other hand has gone to the forest to seek these Cyber Guerrillas with the logic: Why fight them when we can put them on our payroll to have new exciting features and fight off security loopholes ? http://dvice.com/archives/2011/08/so-long-ios-hac.php http://www.freakgeeks.com/apple-hires-developer-of-jail-break-tweaks/ http://dvice.com/archives/2011/02/boo-sony-grante.php Not a bad way to get your Resume Noticed [?] [?]
