This is ridiculously cool. IBM came up with an off-the-grid internet hotspot. I have visions of this running cyber cafes in shags somewhere... :) http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-solarnetone/ Summary: In many parts of the world, the power grid is shoddy, computers are scarce, and connectivity is even rarer. Thus, as with many other modern practices and technologies, populations are increasingly bifurcated into the "computing haves" and the "computing have-nots." But many are addressing the divide. SolarNetOne is a turnkey Internet hotspot—power, computers, and satellite uplink—you can install virtually anywhere, for less than the cost of a subcompact car. In point of fact, corruption is often the most significant impediment to deployment. Often, shady customs officials or other government employees can cause problems. Johnson reports that at least one deployment was scuttled by efforts of proprietary interests seeking greater "developing world market share." Hi, A complete deployment inclusive of VSAT- bandwidth costs about shilling 1.2 million. I actually wrote an article on SolarNetOne on an article published by Kenya Institute of Management -Journal sometime back. Scott Johnson, the inventor is my friend. He wrote "The SolarNetOne Story" here http://solarnetone.org/blog/?p=11 See also http://linuxsolar.com/about.html .Can post his video link, if you want. regards, Alex On Thu, Jul 16, 2009 at 9:19 AM, Dennis Kioko<dmbuvi@gmail.com> wrote:
