What would it take to create an internet blackout in kenya?

Just wondering, are we any worse or better than Egypt? Lets theorize for a moment, suppose a scenario arose where communication to the outside world needed to be cut off, what would it take? -- *“The twentieth century has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power, and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy”* ~ Alex Carey ~ Tel No: 0x2af23696

Other than KPLC? I'm guessing taking down Longonot, Wananchi, Alldean (and a couple of other Sat providers :) ) plus the fibre cables, SEACOM, EASSy etc.... On Tue, Feb 1, 2011 at 12:16 PM, [Brainiac] <arebacollins@gmail.com> wrote:

If we bury our heads in the sand and pretend there is no such problem, it will be deployed and we will be caught unawares. if we discuss it and take mitigating solutions, at least we are prepared, So @TheMburu, its like saying installing fire fighting equipment is paramount to expecting a fire.

"The Revolution will NOT be televised..." Now that we realize that the internet and it's imminent ubiquity does not necessarily grant the required freedoms, it's high time we realised that Erik's (of Ushahidi), "If it works in Africa, it will work anywhere" philosophy needs to be stepped up a notch. In this context, I remember a very interesting project by Tonee, of Wazimba, called blue-tooth stumbling. Any progress since? An excerpt, here from TedX Nairobi<http://www.tedxnairobi.com/tag/tonee-ndungu> “Everybody uses Bluetooth for something, for passing music, pictures , information and the like” says Tonee and so they embarked on a journey to teach people how to use their mobile phones using Bluetooth without them necessarily wanting to use them. In a nutshell they developed an autonomous viral application that utilises a technique called ‘bluetooth stumbling’ where they are able to push messages virally to mobile phones and using techniques open to the public. They are able to push messages to other phones without the standard authorisation approvals from the receiving device. The interesting bit is that the application has elements of ‘viral biomimicity’ whereby it installs itself onto the host mobile phone and starts the process of pushing messages to other phones. Hence information is ported for free from one point to another and it a brings a whole new meaning to the 6 degrees of separation concept. Legal isssues aside this technology brings about an exponential increase in information bandwidth and brings about novel and efficient ways to push information to the grass roots without necessarily relying on last mile internet solutions. They'll probably get one of us to do it with a cheque for like 75M. I'm sure whoever's picked will find a way :) On Tue, Feb 1, 2011 at 5:28 PM, Luke Kuvheya <tendayi.kuvheya@gmail.com>wrote:

In Kenya; cutting out main internet is simple... Simply send a few guys in the Ukambani wide lands; with a panga... And they cut the fiber [?]<whack!> === Yes I know we have the issue of satellites etc,, but i have noticed that many companies abandoned the more expensive satellites for the cheaper (more vulnerable) fiber. Then after that the fiber, the Gova then shuts down power... And guys with satellite continue using UPS. When UPS runs outs, we will be left with guys with Solar --- and thats like less than 0.5%. So if we dont want to be shut down (internet wise),, lets invest on building by building Solar energy,, and add a little satellite connection! w/regards Stephen N.

@steven you forget redundancy on KPLC. but then again, easy to run an inside job there... right? On Wed, Feb 2, 2011 at 5:32 PM, ndungu stephen <ndungustephen@gmail.com>wrote:

I dint know KPLC had a redundancy; (you are referring to power or the fiber ??) But then I figure, if gova tells them to shut down the elec.. then down goes the fiber!

@ Roy we are postulating hypothetically if Kenya wanted to cut internet out to avoid an "Egypt,Tunusia,Lebanon" situation; I hope the satellite phone can charge via Solar (or alternate energy) - cos if they implement a Nairobi "special blackout" - internet will be out in 3 hours. @James Interesting read!

Don't u think that if the government wanted to shutout communication going for totally elec shutdown would abit of an overkill ..... this would lost affect govt operation or they have their own generating plant?????? On Feb 2, 2011 7:33 PM, "ndungu stephen" <ndungustephen@gmail.com> wrote:

@James Interesting read!

That would be the question: If they really wanted to prevent internet communication (completely) - would they result to shutting down elec ? Ama there are other things they would do to make sure Kenyans have no net... Or would their *best* option be cutting out elec ? We would never know until the day comes.

I think the most effective network would one which uses all internet connections as nodes. where traffic is routed from one node to another without a central mechanism. this means that we would need PCs to handle some form of routing and identification
