Mark, suggest you must learn linux as it has many surprises too, especially if one is used to plug n play world. There are many articles on the net about learning linux.... You may also consider FreeBSD, it has a complete book and full instruction. Check out their site. I learnt much from Freebsd and still sometimes use it as a useful tool, along with windows too. Not all OS's have all the features that one maybe looking for. HTH's . :-)

Hi Mark, Ubuntu will do you just fine if you need a smooth transition from Windows to *nix without having to engage in black magic and voodoo incantations. If you dont mind, you could try sabayon 4, knoppix 6, or Vector Linux for more adventure. With these, you could pick up this book http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz and learn spell-binding commands and invocations! btw the book, rute, applies to any *nix system and you will find it extremely helpful now and even much later when you are become the geekest of us all. try it. another one to try would be linuxfromscratch.org, you build your system from .. well .. nothing, scratch. as daunting as the task may sound, you are not literally plunging into the unknown; there's a very detailed accompanying guide book that will help you in the setup. here, you concoct your own magic spells and devise rituals. you are now your own druid! Good luck, and welcome .. :) -- Ndungi Kyalo

mwangi, migration depends on many factors; consider this, mimi ni maasai. why would i migrate from Narok to Nairobi? 1. make a list of tools or applications you use on windows that you would like to keep using. 2. find out if Linux (or any other OS can replicate the functions) 3. install *nix on a separate partition on your disk; or if you have enough RAM install http://vmware.com and run linux as a virtual machine. 4. migrate completely when you are completely sure you can continue to be productive on the new platform. Mwangi, My jump to linux was more dramatic and I never regretted it. My Windoze machine crashed one day in First Year campus. I lost all my data, applications etc. I just loaded RedHat 5 and have never looked back. Sometimes just take the plunge stop worrying about what may or may not work. You're intelligent enough to solve any problem that comes your way. Only Tip is to use Google, Linux How-to-s & Skunkworks. Whatever you're experiencing someone else has.. -----Original Message----- From: ukuta ken <ukutaken@gmail.com> Reply-to: Skunkworks forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> To: Skunkworks forum <skunkworks@lists.my.co.ke> Subject: Re: [Skunkworks] Taking The Linux Plunge Date: Mon, 24 Aug 2009 07:36:07 +0300 mwangi, migration depends on many factors; consider this, mimi ni maasai. why would i migrate from Narok to Nairobi? 1. make a list of tools or applications you use on windows that you would like to keep using. 2. find out if Linux (or any other OS can replicate the functions) 3. install *nix on a separate partition on your disk; or if you have enough RAM install http://vmware.com and run linux as a virtual machine. 4. migrate completely when you are completely sure you can continue to be productive on the new platform.
