Disk Full, yet not actually full

I have a strange phenomena on an Mecer Classmate netbook, though I think this has nothing to do with the computer mode. It's running Windows XP SP3. The disk shows it's almost full - 3GB Free out of 60GB, yet a physical analysis of all the files and folders show they total only about 7GB. I have run scandisk (/R /F) - takes hours to complete, but doesn't seem to "cure" the disease. Is it time to dump the disk or there a cure someone knows of out there? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

Hello Fredrick, Do you mind giving me a copy of that Disk Visualizer? -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

Try doing the same while running in safe mode. There's also an open source application called WinDirStat (Windows Directory Stats) that can help you detect what file(s) are hogging your disk space. On 1 November 2010 10:10, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

To see the real size of profiles on windows XP; * Right click on *My Computer* and go to *properties* * On *Advanced* tab under *user Profiles* click *Settings* You will see the sizes of each of the profile on Windows XP. You might be surprised there might be one profile which is extremely big and the best thing you could just delete it from this location. regards, James On 11/1/2010 1:01 PM, Odhiambo Washington wrote:

I already went past this before I posted the question. It was actually the first step before I went into manual folder properties, treezise utility, etc. I am at that point where I see a particular folder, suspected to be where all the sh*t is happening, and I just cannot delete this folder!
Ok3ch, I will try f-prot, if they have a trial version, or something. M$ Security Essentials does not detect anything though. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

Download Kaspersky rescue CD,scan the comp.Take hirens CD and go to temp folder and delete the contents. In some cases i have found that when the anti virus crashes it create a huge log file so also check on that.

I'll get an external DVD drive to do that. It's a computer without an optical drive. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

PC DM Files :-) That's what I've found eating on all the space. Not easy to delete when Windows is running in the very disk. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Damn!!

You have a virus.. which hides huge folders which u cannot access even if u "show hiden folders" so i normaly perform a recovery off all files from another computer using recovery program or put the drive externally on a linux pc.. or.. if u kno the name of the missing folder eg C:\users\atoti\my document\videos. so in this case videos was the hidden folder bt now u can open it and cut paste content to a new visible Video Folder. Seen this before. Can be caused by a HD sector, O/S or virus. Try this: Download and run CCleaner, http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner, just don't install the toolbars it comes with ;-) in the Advanced options, check Custom files and wipe free space options. Analyse and then clean. It will take some time (wipe free space) but at least it will remove all the unecessary junk in the drive. The registry and startup tools also work well. run the registry tools... will unhinge most viruses (not remove, see below) Then checkdisk the drive (chkdsk c: /x /f /r (probably will ask you to reboot)) Then defrag the drive. File Still not deletable, download and run combofix ( www.bleepingcomputer.com/*combofix*/how-to-use-*combofix)* If this doesn't work, start looking for a replacement. I consider ccleaner a very nice, but simplistic tool for my scenario. It also has nothing to do with combofix. I already did chkdsk /F /R and defrag, but those did not help. I have experience this problem also and there could be one of the following problems 1. Virus Activity - Easy way to detect this is if the space distribution (free or used) keeps changing erratically & very often. A good antivirus ought to sort the problem. 2. Temp folders may be heavy with stuff e.g. installation files. Please check the following folders. They are hidden folders so u may be forced to type in the address. - C:\Documents and Settings\"account name"\Local Settings\Temp\ (*do this for all accounts in the Windows installation*) - C:\WINDOWS\Installer\ Hope this works for you. If you solve it byother method(s) please do share with us. -- Kind regards, [image: Image by FlamingText.com] <http://littlehacker.wordpress.com/> twitter: @e_muchemi <http://twitter.com/e_muchemi> http://littlehacker.wordpress.com/ "He who strays discovers new paths." ~ Nils Kjær Livin' on the edge!!

I had this issue sometime back, and it was actually a viral activity. All I kept doing is moving the files I needed to another folder and deleting the culprit folder, but it kept happening again and again until the anti-virus (I guess I used f-prot then) identified and cleaned the virus + loads of registry entries. Most likely its an infection, or atleast for my instance it was an infection. ./Ok3ch On Mon, Nov 1, 2010 at 1:02 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:
