I hear safaricom DATA services have been down for a while today, hurlingham, south c etc. Also heard that some ISPs too have been down since today morning.

The question that lingers on my mind is do these blue chip companies - per our standards - have a fall back plan to avert such calamities from taking place in fuure? Interestingly, the CEOs of these companies are always blaming it on this and that technical hitch. Apparently there were some fibre cuts yesterday, affecting Nairobi and its environs. Which took a while to sort out. The way I see it, Kenya has a long way to go, in the way we do things. look at nairobi for example: it wasnt built with expansion in mind, right now KDN and all these firms are busy digging up sidewalks to lay their fibres, and when they lay their it, its not deep enought so when some NCC plumber comes to do maitenance work they cut the fibre. Or during construction which by the way has messed up the fibre so many time esp along thika road. If you look at Germany, America and so on, thier towns had an elaborate undrground system close to a century ago. Even though they didnt use it at the time its helped them now, for their rail road, sewage and so on. For us we do things in an ad hoc manner. no order in whatever we do. so when we have a national blackout for 5 hours its just a representation of what goes on in the country. nobody is passionate enough to do things. The last master plan for Nairobi was done when Dr. Kang'ethe Gitu was, I think a PS in the local govt ministry. I'm not sure when this was but I guess it was some three decades ago. The plan did not see the light of the day. We do have brilliant ideas but implementing them is messy, take for example, before Thika Rd expansion started Nairobi city council had trees planted to KU, before they matured some Chinese firms cut the trees down to create a room for expansion. Remember Tobacco Act vs. City Council anti-smoking bye laws? There is also the case of misplaced priorities e.g. building a monument and cultural centre for Obama using taxpayers money, instead of chanelling the cash to say, an improved food security etc. Just wait after the rains recede then we start whinning! Time and again, [purely in my head] I have wondered: How can a people live in a place (X) for centuries and generations without knowing: 1) this place floods, and it has been flooding for the past 100 years,,, should we wait for governments as we die and our houses are flooded.... or should we build our houses at a height (y) based on previous data, or we should stop activities till the flood season is over? 2) this place has droughts, but occasionally, like once a year, it rains seriously.
