The Megaupload Story - I read mischief
Guys, I believe [perhaps with the exception of Steve Ndung'u - no offense :)] that ya'll are aware of MegaUpload's closure and the arrest of its top officials. I've been reading up on the whole thing and what I know or have so far found is that: - MegaUpload does the same stuff as a number of other filesharing sites such as rapidshare.com, depositfiles.com etc (not to mention P2P which does more or less the same thing, albeit without revenues going to anyone in particular) - MegaUpload signed a deal with a number of artists like The Game, Macy Gray etc to do a viral campaign for MegaUpload (see the MegaUpload song<http://www.google.com/search?q=the+megaupload+song> ) - The artists involved in the above campaign are all signed with UMG, one of the "top three" in the music industry - UMG instructed YouTube to take down the MegaUpload song video. Kim Schmitz (MegaUpload founder) asks what authority UMG has to issue takedown notices to YouTube over material owned exclusively by MegaUpload - UMG must be really big powerful. Vivendi owns UMG, therefore Vivendi must be quite big and uber-powerful Now my questions are as follows: - Who owns Vivendi? - Why is MegaUpload being targeted by feds? Don't give me that SOPA/PIPA/copyright stuff because rapidshare and its likes are still up Is there something we're not being told here? By the way, I've tried to find out who owns Vivendi and all I am getting is info on what Vivendi owns (and they own A LOT). @Simon, the Megauload issue has nothing to do with SOPA/PIPA. These guys have been investigated for years. Just because they have been operating does not mean the feds were on to them. Now before a Judge can issue international arrest warrants... I stress International... You need to show the Judges probable reason and you need to convince the grand jury a crime has been committed which means thorough investigations have to have been done. Now one thing you need to know about the Feds is that they dont just wake up one morning and come after you. If anything is done out of the book the case can fall without a trial. With that in mind they can investigate you for years and know all your activities and still not come after you which. That doesnt mean you aint being investigated. The Feds will not come public and announce every site thats been investigated. When you ask what about rapidshare, deposite files etc. What makes you think they too are not under investigation. Its like you been busted then snitching on your friends. Its the Feds prerogative to make a move on who they think they have built enough tangible evidence to make it to court. Dont jump into the politics of the Feds intelligence before you understand it. Eg - the list of faces behind Equity Bank is protected by 9 years.. But I still have a hunch that hapa iko kitu. I think it's common knowledge that the powers that be (read, the state and the judiciary) are not always clean. A comment I read somewhere read that the RIAA have also been laundering millions of dollars. It was a user comment with no source cited, so I never included it in my mail, but I wouldn't be surprised to know that it's actually true. S.
