What? I thought this was some sort of virus inherent only in Samsung TVs? :-)

Well I am not a DSTV expert (anyway I left DSVT) but I can guarantee you that there is a number popping up for few seconds at important sport live event like League 1 games or UEFA games... My assumption is that it is a tracking number ? I may be wrong; but that's why they cut your free glitch just after/while you were watching live sport. Don't know if this is true but back in 2008 when we were doing some system for DSTV they were discussing broadcast rights for sports events that they would purchase and re-broadcast to their subscribers, then cover the costs from the regular subscription fees. They wanted to find a way where they would know if their broadcast was being re-broadcast by other unauthorized TV channels (both love and recorded) and they came up with the idea of plastering some letters on the screen for some period of time so that their people would know and report illegal recordings and broadcasts of these events. Clearly they'd have to have their people watching lots of TV and reporting if they saw the letters on non DSTV and non authorized channels. But apparently it was a requirement of the sellers: They wanted a way to prevent, or at least report illegal recordings and re-broadcasts, they seemed to be happy with the idea so they did it just to make the sellers happy. Kevin, This has nothing to do with new packages. The number you seen on your screen is actual the smartcard number or serial number of you decoder. This is called digital watermarking/fingerprinting. This is purely to fight piracy. J. On Mon, Oct 1, 2012 at 2:49 PM, george <theonlydamnedavailablename@gmail.com

Simple if you record or redistribute your signal illegally the can track the source using the serial number and discontinue service

Kevin,
This has nothing to do with new packages. The number you seen on your screen is actual the smartcard number or serial number of you decoder. This is called digital watermarking/fingerprinting.
This is purely to fight piracy.

Insignificant? Uh-oh, not likely. Random? Double-not-likely. The "random numbers" could be generated from a known seed (e.g. the device serial number). There could be a bunch of stored, pre-defined "random numbers" that the system cycles through, but the casual observer would prolly never notice as repeating (try cycle through 100 8-digit random numbers, see how many you'll notice repeating). Just my random thoughts :-) The anti-piracy suggestion by more-informed, DSTV-watching skunks seems to make sense... //MB On Mon, Oct 1, 2012 at 5:18 PM, Ken Teyie <kenteyie@gmail.com> wrote:

Mark, If you are distributing channels illegally, then provider need only to know the areas you are distributing then they will get their guys on ground(either their team will subscribe to the illegal connections or visit one of the home/hse with sambaza), then will ask office to trigger watermark. This will display the serial number/smartcard number of the decoder(s) being used to sambaza. Then they will just block them on their Conditional access system. and take any other action (legal mostly). So wachana na Sambaza! This has reminded of a discussion had here in 2010 about the signal distribution that is done in those apartment complexes. Search for dstv signal distribution in the archives. one Aki was very knowledgeable on this. But that being said those no.s are random but the watermark thing would so work. I assume the watermark is implemented network or country wide? Also do the DSTV guys know your geographic position. If I remove my dish and decoder in a setup in Kitui and set it up in Eldama Ravine would they know of the geographic change? On Mon, Oct 1, 2012 at 6:15 PM, skunk me <skunksme@gmail.com> wrote:

This has reminded of a discussion had here in 2010 about the signal distribution that is done in those apartment complexes. Search for dstv signal distribution in the archives. one Aki was very knowledgeable on this.
But that being said those no.s are random but the watermark thing would so work. I assume the watermark is implemented network or country wide?
The Numbers are not random. They can only be random if you are receiving feed from a sambaza guy. Sambaza guys have a set of STBs each dedicated to a single channel. so if you change channel, you actually connect to a different stb.
Also do the DSTV guys know your geographic position. If I remove my dish and decoder in a setup in Kitui and set it up in Eldama Ravine would they know of the geographic change?
- the satellite dish is RO (Receive ONLY) thus no bidirectional communication. Communication back to provider has to be through any other mode.

Mark,
If you are distributing channels illegally, then provider need only to know the areas you are distributing then they will get their guys on ground(either their team will subscribe to the illegal connections or visit one of the home/hse with sambaza), then will ask office to trigger watermark.
This will display the serial number/smartcard number of the decoder(s) being used to sambaza. Then they will just block them on their Conditional access system. and take any other action (legal mostly).
So wachana na Sambaza!

how does plastering the decoder serial no. on the screen deter piracy? do people know this no. offhead?

Kevin,
This has nothing to do with new packages. The number you seen on your screen is actual the smartcard number or serial number of you decoder. This is called digital watermarking/fingerprinting.
This is purely to fight piracy.

I guess it has something to do with the extra packages they added starting today

This morning I observed I could view all channels on DSTV ( i.e Premium channels yet I am on compact). Its it an issue related to changeover or have they finally seen the light and want to offer competitive prices .( though I suspect the former is the case)
