Kudos to Kenya Police at Ngong(Floods)

I was a victim of the ngong floods jana.Ogopa maji,i witnessed a car being swept away by water... kenya police used their strong land cruiser to pull the cars that could not wade through the tough waters(I hope it was free) The previous night(Sato)they were there in person and pushing cars out of the mud(n the roads are tarmac). thumbs up to them.

@Lawrence, sorry about your experience. And great to know that the KP still got it. Did the rivers burst their banks, go up all the way to populated areas and wash away the cars or was it that people built access roads on perennial rivers and nature was doing what it has done for thousands of years? Would it be that those people could not patiently wait for the water levels to subside and then drive to their homes but were fighting nature and got stuck? Would it be now okay to say Ogopa Mudslides which are more likely with the current rainfall? Will then people who are in the path of the slides complain too and will KP come out with gabions etc to help out? Humans and Nature have to clash at some point and the winner will always be nature. Sad but true unfortunately. Some thoughts..... :-)

@ Aki Its not like that, the roads are strategically built, but the rains exceeded everybody's expectations. They brought every crap(stone, mud, tree branches) to the tarmac then covered them with a layer of mud... When u look at the road u may think its just water and mud, when u drive, its when u know there are lots of stuffs hidden beneath it.Most cars stuck their 'bellies' on the big hidden rocks... If u watched the Citizen news, one car got stuck on a waterway,it was washed n covered as whole by water.... aki wrote:

@Lawrence, I drove in the heavy rain to the airport on saturday nite to drop off a friend and I've seen this rainfall over years. I also saw some crazy kenyan drivers who caused a vehicle pileup near chiromo and also many of those who go blind when it rains and cannot follow lanes and drive very dangeriously at the expense of others. At the Mall roundabout, there was a car that had gone up the roundabout...... Nature will fight back and surprise any driver. One has to make an good decision whether to wait or go forward. Yeah if you have a tank with tracks, then hakuna shida..... :-)

I drove from Naivasha, left at 8:40 pm in the evening,I arrived in the city at a about 10:40.Talk of roads clogging up with water, poor visibility esp on the highway, and careless and carefree matatu drivers. It was a testing of how patient one can be in such situations. But the rain, too many. Is there a way we can be able to recycle that water instead of letting it go to waste? Hi @James, since we on driving conditions, I drove to Lake Bogoria and back to Nai same day. It is easy to drive very fast on those roads but we all know the rule of thumb. Expect livestock and and humans on the highways because there are smaller communities that exist there and chances of a bad accident are possible. Will now a stupid driver go at even 120kph and slam into a cow/goat/sheep on a corner? How many times have I see this even with bus drivers. Ahero near kisumu has many small communities and the livestock is on the road but drivers will still push the pedal. In other places speed "humps" are not even painted on some roads and sign posted, this is another caution. Such road conditions are normal for a dev country so nothing unique about it, caution is headed. PSV drivers think they know the roads, well here is an example of surprise! A few years ago, I was heading into Naivasha via limuru and the usual thick fog kept anyone from going fast. A bus overtook me and so did a matutu. About 10 minutes into the drive, I slammed on the brakes and avoided a collision with something.. the matutu was not lucky. It had slammed into a dead cow that had been knocked by the bus. All this in thick fog... I'm sure many others have road experiences and can share too. All the rain water going to waste is something the govt with water cachement areas should be thinking about containing. ? :-) BTW @Lawrence, Nakumatt Ukay is built on a river. If the tenants of that building should find their wares being swept away due to heavy rains, what should they do? On Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 12:47 PM, James Muendo <timrick@gmail.com> wrote:

@Aki, I tell you the speeds I was doing was about 60km/hr.Going to Naivasha, well,I pushed the car to about 140km/hr and managed pretty well, but on coming back the fog, argh! And it was so thick at times I would have to do 40km/hr.But somehow I got matatu drivers overtaking at very high speeds say about 80km/hr.I wonder how they were seeing the roads, hence heavy carnage on our roads. Then if you go beyond 80 and hit pools of water the car looses control. It was just a tough journey! Water catchment,I think in Dubai, when it rains water goes to the drainage and somehow ends up in a treatment plant, its passed through the whole process and then finally sent back to the taps, hence,no water rationing as it happens in the city. Now that its raining, water conservation institutions should adopt such mechanisms. My 2cents! On 11/01/2010 13:13, aki wrote:

@James, @140 bado uko slow sana ( with what is possible with the roads and if you want to test the speed limiter set by factories with cars from JDM markets but NEVER NEVER try this with soft suspensions or worn out tires/under rated tyres or good brakes and write a will/say a departing prayer and hug your family goodbye ) ...... ;-)

@Aki I was trying to be decent. With a German vehicle, when am alone, things are normally alot more thicker and faster.Of course,Suspension is good, though I have to know whether the speed "humps" and potholes are. On 11/01/2010 13:49, aki wrote:

@Aki,
I tell you the speeds I was doing was about 60km/hr.Going to Naivasha, well,I pushed the car to about 140km/hr and managed pretty well, but on coming back the fog, argh!
@James, @140 bado uko slow sana ( with what is possible with the roads and if you want to test the speed limiter set by factories with cars from JDM markets but NEVER NEVER try this with soft suspensions or worn out tires/under rated tyres or good brakes and write a will/say a departing prayer and hug your family goodbye ) ...... ;-)

The speed limit is set at 100 kph for a reason :) -- Josiah Mugambi Ted Turner <http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/t/ted_turner.html> - "Sports is like a war without the killing." On Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 1:51 PM, James Muendo <timrick@gmail.com> wrote:

I was trying to be decent. With a German vehicle, when am alone, things are normally alot more thicker and faster.Of course,Suspension is good, though I have to know whether the speed "humps" and potholes are.

Cant the media for once show such a positive response from the police. They can also highlight the dikes done by Kenya army at Budalangi to control the floods that used to be.....Not negative all the time... aki wrote:

I was a victim of the ngong floods jana.Ogopa maji,i witnessed a car being swept away by water...
kenya police used their strong land cruiser to pull the cars that could not wade through the tough waters(I hope it was free)
The previous night(Sato)they were there in person and pushing cars out of the mud(n the roads are tarmac).
thumbs up to them.
