I have a server that has 3 hard disks that have been set up on raid 5, The problem is that 1 hdd has failed and another is showing signs of failing. I would like to replace the 2 failed disks without a downtime on the server, is that possible? -- Regards, C . K

If they're hot-swap bays, just pull the drive out of the enclosure and put in a new one - done. -- Kili.io - OpenStack for Africa: https://angel.co/kili-io Musings: https://twitter.com/varud About Adam: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Wed, Aug 14, 2013 at 12:28 PM, charles kungu <charles.kungu@gmail.com>wrote:

Job, There are instances when you can stomach running on a shoe-string budget. I cannot be with data backups. It can never be with data backups. Even with a shoe-string budget, contingency comes first. In many organizations, IT Department is never taken seriously. In fact it never exists until there is an IT problem:) In any setup DATA is the most critical. I'd forego everything else but make sure the DATA is safe - whatever the budget. Wash, I agree 100%, but...in many organisations, the IT budget is often little, and is actually expected to be for the purchase of the next $shiny_but_useless_gadget_of_the_month for managers and such. Talk about extra storage or backups? At best, you'll get a small usb hdd. Spare HDDs for the server, "just in case"? Good luck. with that I'm willing to bet a good number of sysadmins make do only due to their own creativity & initiative - scavenging HDDs from junked PCs, backups stored on personal usb drives etc Ironically, the fact that they keep things working splendidly on such tiny budgets only reinforces the thinking that they don't need much more. Begin cycle of budget cuts. //experience speaketh [?] On Wed, Aug 14, 2013 at 4:02 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com>wrote:

@Motobaridi, you are so so right! IT budget is categorized as "overheads" in the Finance Manager's budget proposals. In many places they place ICT Manager to report to the Finance Manager, not the CEO :-) On 14 August 2013 16:37, motobaridi <motobaridi@gmail.com> wrote:

A reputable supplier should supply the new ones and then receive the bad ones on credit. The worst case scenario would be that you give them a deposit for the new drives and then get the deposit back once they get the bad ones. -- Kili.io - OpenStack for Africa: https://angel.co/kili-io Musings: https://twitter.com/varud About Adam: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Wed, Aug 14, 2013 at 12:40 PM, charles kungu <charles.kungu@gmail.com>wrote:

Do it systematically. Replace the faulty one first, then rebuild the raid. Once rebuild is complete, replace the other disk thats about to fail and rebuild again. Not all servers support rebuilding on the fly therefore you might be forced to power down the machine and rebuild from the raid utility.
