As a contributor for the African Network for Localization, I got stuck on a few Kikuyu words. I came across some words that are really tough. I may need the assistance of anyone who knows Gikuyu properly, and I mean properly. For instance, what is the Kikuyu word for "three days ago"? How do you give AM/PM in Kiuk? If you think you can assist, please get in touch offlist so that we help each other to complete this task. Ithe wa Ciru.

Right there Mburu. There are actually locales for 100 African languages being developed. Quite a big number of them are Kenyan. So am sure there are guys here working on the Kogelo language, and many others. Mugo's post was actually very funny. But it may look insulting to others on the list who are are not from the mountain. I am sure we will have a lively discussion once we start that discussion elsewhere. Just send me a mail and we will carry on with it. All, please keep in mind that the development of African Locales is a very very important initiative for the sake of future localization projects. Sometime ago, I raised that issue of ~ placed on top of an I or U in Kikuyu at one of KENIC public foras and I was told our vernaculars follow the Arabic or roman alphabet unlike Chinese hieroglyphics {Cuneiform?} which has some special characters. The local languages are under threat, in this era of globalized everything! On 20/05/2009, Ndungi Kyalo <ndungi@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Ndungi, Use character mapper. Type *charmap *in the run command box (both windows and Linux have it) . For Linux, at least I know Knoppix 5 has it, or else you could sudo apt-get it. Me. 2009/5/20 Ndungi Kyalo <ndungi@gmail.com>
Speaking of local languages, am yet to find out how we put that "~" on top of an "i" (replacing the dot) with the current keyboard layouts. anybody know?
Secondly, some words in my mother tongue (Kamba) spelt the same way, mean entirely different things when pronounced with different intonations. I wonder how this situation is handled by locale translators? Am first to propose a Kao keyboard layout !

In fact I was about to raise this issue. I have done it in the past. Some time way back I was designing a funeral programme in kikuyu, and I managed to use those characters. There is a key combination (on any keyboard) that produces special characters depending on particular number combinations. I had a listing of them but am not sure I will get it now. I will look and let you know. But in case anybody toboas that please share with us. Something like you shift (or alt) and hit 100 or something.
