Good people, A friend of mine told me he bought a "DVB-T Set top thingy which i connect to a kawaida aerial, then to a kawaida tv using the red/green/white video cables" apparently, this device costs abt 6k in the supermarkets and converts the analogue signal to digital, plus it enables him to "receive" about 8 additional free to air channels, including HBO! Not wanting to sound like an idiot, i didnt confirm or deny his achievements. Someone please tell me, what is this thingy my friend is talking about and does it do everything he says it does?

not advisable to buy DVB-T set top boxes, government has tendered roll out of DVB-T2 hence new boxes will be required, plus there is the confusion on whether ISDB will be adopted Refer http://cio.co.ke/view-all-top-stories/1445-african-public-broadcasters-perfo... 8

Wololo!!! Does this mean DVB-T(1) will not be forward compatibe (I mean to use backwards compatible in the reverse aspect!)? If so, then this is the cost borne by early adopters... always ends up losing out, yet they are key to "perception" (or proof) that something works. I remember the days when mobile phones (or was it the service) used to cost over KES 100k for one to get an Ericsson phone booth in the name of a handset;) -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

Wash, Wake he not that sleepth because you'll sleep yourself * (direct kiswahili translation). I quick trip to wikipedia reveals the following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVB-T2 The main purpose of DVB-T is spectrum efficiency and not ease of ability to watch many programs :-)This is an ITU requirement and we all must abide by it because, it's impreative that the world frees up spectrum for LTE and other advancing technologies. The first standard DVB-T has been improved to come up with T2 and by visiting the link above you'll see what changes have been made. They have to do with Modulation and technical capabilities of the standard. To the best of my ability, DVB-T2 is backward compatible. The Kenyan implemenation has been pretty smooth with the exception of all TV stations. They don't update the EPG and what's even worse KTN over the last week or so has been have serious lag issues. Voice and Video are totally out of synch with as much as 5 secs. It's my hope that freedom of media will also come with technical aptitute for the sake of advancement. Kenya is currently deploying DVB-T and the expansion phase is currently going through Expression of Interest with the PS Information and Communication and aims to cover the entire country. Hope this helps. Kiania D. On Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 3:46 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

Reading Wikipedia and listening to David Kiania are two different things for me. I like the later because it makes me feel I am in real touch! So now, what advantage does those who own DVB-T2 have over those who have DVB-T, not in technical terms but in layman's (TV viewer) experience? That is what I was asking, Davie. -- Best regards, Odhiambo WASHINGTON, Nairobi,KE +254733744121/+254722743223 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ "If you have nothing good to say about someone, just shut up!." -- Lucky Dube

The major difference is optimization of bandwidth by the infrastructure provider. This means that more channels are made available. Let's distinguish two issues, the infrastructure and the content, DVB-T2 is an improvement on infrastructure it's up to the content providers to improve on your experience. http://www.dvb.org/technology/fact_sheets/DVB-T2_Factsheet.pdf (read this as if am the one reading it to you) Kiania On Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 4:31 PM, Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> wrote:

Pretty informative article there, thanks! Well, I can't wait for DVB-T2 boxes, am most definitely getting whatever I find in the supermarket! 16 local channels? Ok, let me try to get my maths right: 1. NTV 2. KTN 3. Citizen 4. KBC 5. KISS TV 6. Family 7. GBS (where the heck did this come from? I saw it for the first time juzi) 8. e-africa 9. Al Jazeera 10. Classic TV 11. K24 12. CNBC 13. East African TV 14. ....

Hi Peter! It's just a kawaida digital reciever. I confirm that it does the above things, all you need is a kawa aerial and rca cables. I bought mine at edgnet ltd @6k. It has PVR and you can play stuff from usb, you can sometimes recieve free to air channels depending on the location and aerial signal strength though under normal circumstances you get 16 local channels.
